Scientists unveiled today an unprecedented new look at our planet at night. A global composite image, constructed using cloud-free night images from a new NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite, shows the glow of natural and human-built phenomena across the planet in greater detail than ever before.

Cropping would cause a loss of part of the image. You'd be better off letting Windows just scale it IMO.

Impressive.
I can pick up the Australian capital cities but the extreme emissions from central Western Australia is very puzzling. It's pretty rugged territory with quite a bit of mining going on but it's lit up like a Christmas tree

Yep , the central australia is very sparsely populated . :shock:

Most lights seem to be in northern India and in Belgium - they illuminate all highways at night. Not sure what's going on in northern India. Mabe they have low electricity rates.

I guess for India , the picture must have been taken during diwali which is also called the festival of light . Also there is one more thing to note that northern India has the population of around 500 million and majority of them lives in rural areas .
Since northern India has high density therefore it appears to scattered and not concentrated in small areas like in cities.
This is what i think or maybe this is the theory which comes close to proving it .

Hum I am surprised the lights are not more through Iran as I remember flying to the UK and passing over it was a like a birthday cake with hundreds of oil wells flaring not to mention the lights as well.
