Build 7000 (32-bit)
Eee PC 900HA, Atom N270
945GSE (GMA950), Intel WDDM 1.0 Prerelease

About 3 seconds after I plug in an external monitor (VGA-out), my netbook LCD screen goes black (backlight still on) and the system locks up. No display on external monitor. I'm pretty sure it's a BSoD (just not visible since it's a display issue). If I plug in the monitor and then boot, windows will go through the loading screen and just before showing the welcome screen, it will reboot (and go through a loop).

What I have tried:
-Removing ACPI driver (only available ACPI driver is designed for XPDM).
-Installing the monitor driver before plugging it in.
-Using safe mode (safe mode will only mirror the display just like it does in BIOS).
-A different monitor.
-Win+P and selecting option just before plugging in.

I'm fairly sure the issue is Intel driver related. I could uninstall the current driver and install Intels XPDM driver and give that a try, but I would lose Aero and there are stability and compatibility issues with the old XP drivers on many 3D applications. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi kubel and welcome to Se7en Forums

It does sound like a driver issue. You could try what you suggest, but I am not sure what will happen if you do. If you do decide to do this, and the external monitor subsequently works, then it is fairly certain that the driver is the root cause of the problem. You state that this driver is prerelease, which suggests that it is a beta driver, and, as such, may not have full functionality or monitor support for more than the built-in screen on your laptop.

Just noticed - are you dual booting on this laptop? If so, does the external monitor work satisfactorily with your XP installation?

Yeah, external displays work just fine on XP. Thanks for the warm welcome :).

I'm trying to install the XP/Vista Intel driver, but no matter how I go about doing it (run as admin, run in compatibility mode for vista, etc...) I will get an error that says it's not compatible with my OS, or the application stopped responding, or a failed to initialize (0xc0000005).

When I try installing through device manager manually, it says my prerelease drivers are the best drivers and won't install the old ones. When I try uninstalling the prerelease drivers, the only way that I can install the driver manually is by scanning for a hardware change (otherwise display adapter won't be listed). And once that happens, W7 auto installs the latest driver again.

I've tried XP, Vista, and ASUS XPDM drivers. I've got a few more things I'm going to try before I give up and go back to WDDM.

Hi kubel,

I have a somewhat similiar problem with my EeePC 900HA:
When I plug in an external monitor, after a few seconds both
the internal LCD and the external LCD turn black. However Windows
did not crash. I can get the display back only by power cycling (either
standby or reboot).

It does not happen always tho. I think the Intel drivers are not
of the best quality after all.
