Emptying Recycle Bin freezes desktop

Nice deduction maluus!

I wonder if the Original Poster (OP) has a dual screen setup that we don't know about?

What is interesting is normally when a window closed last on other screen also starts up on it until it is dragged back to main screen. but when you close a window on main screen it should remain on the main. but in this case (I mean recycle bin confirmation dialog) insist on popping up in other screen instead of main one no matter what I do. I still to determine the cause. My number one suspect is AMD Hydravision. I ll check if it s the one which is responsible. I ll report back when I found out the reason. until then I just "space" and confirme blindly when I want to empty the bin.

Well I comfirm that AMD Hydravision is the reason for confirmation dialog popping in other display. When disabled problem is gone.

Okay, I've tried a system restore: the system won't restore. It seems there's a (now removed) plugin that's preventing the system from completing the restore. Tried it three times from different places. I can't restore from any later because that will be after the problem started. I might try an Icon Cache Rebuild if I don't get any where any other way. Scared about a Repair install, especially as I have a feeling it might be overkill if this is just a simple corruption of the recycle bin.

I've been reading around some more, and tried something recommended on Windows 7: How to Reset the Recycle Bin | a Tech-Recipes Tutorial - namely deleting $Recycle.Bin, whichapparently should be on the root of the C: . Problem is, I can't find it - even if I search the whole C: (yes, I have enabled viewing of hidden files).

Anyone have any suggestions? Am I looking in the wrong place?
Missed this earlier.

Try this: Recycle Bin Corrupted - Cannot Delete File or Folder
Though geared towards Vista it is a more complete explanation of what you're trying to do, It'll show you how to get to $Recycle.Bin .

maluus, thank you for the expanded reply on your findings.
The OP has a AMD Radeon HD 6570 and you have the Radeon 785, I wonder if the OP's 6570 has HydraVision? I see the copyright's from 2002.

Let us suppose....

  • Even if the OP is running only one display.
  • But, HydraVision's Services, and Startup default is Automatic.
  • Would it be enough just to be on and running to interfere with the Display?
To find Driver support, click on the above Hydravision link. Change All to Support.

Well I can't say if it interfered only by being installed or because some option that I change. it needs to be tested. I only disabled everything under hydravision in catalyst control center.
