Enabling ICS with Netgear router....

Thanks for taking the time to read this...if this is all over the map, I apologize. Been messing with this and researching it for well over 3 hours.

I seem to have fallen into a issue that I can not fix. I live in the boonies, as such, the only "high speed" internet I can get is Verizon Wireless Broadband (3G). I have the little USB reciever/transmitter (USB 760).

Two days ago I had managed to get ICS running from the Host (Win 7 pc), through a Netgear router, and broadcast wirelessly out to 2 XP machines and a Nintendo Wii.

I rebooted my computer due to MS updates, and now find myself unable to set up the ICS again. This is what I have been trying to get it running.

Enabled ICS on the Novatel Modem (for 3g) which sets my Lan (cat5) ip to 192.168.137.1

I would get into my router, disable DHCP, and set the router to grab its IP addy automatically from ISP (win 7 machine). As for the LAN IP, I have tried the default of 192.168.1.1, 192.168.137.1, 192.168.137.2 and 10.0.0.1.

Plug in my cat 5 from Lan port on Win 7 machine to Wan/internet port on router. Reboot both devices (pc/router).

Oh, the XP machines get their ip automatically.

My XP machines can find the router, but can not wirelessly connect. I noticed that the router does not appear to be sending any packets as well. It works fine if I was do to a factory reset on it, so I am sure it is not the router.

Am I forgetting a crucial step here? It's driving my family crazy, with my daughter not being able to play her Webkinz, and my wife can't play Animal Crossings with friend online.

Please help!

I am assuming that you have your Desktop PC plugged into routers WAN or Internet port and all other machines are wirelessly connected to the router... right?

Am I correct in that your desktop PC gets the IP 192.168.137.1

and you have tried these IPs as LAN IPs on your router: 192.168.1.1, 192.168.137.1, 192.168.137.2 and 10.0.0.1.??? you must keep IP's in the same subnet. The 192.168.137.xxx subnet is different than 192.168.1.xxx subnet.

Your network is definately unique... your Verizon 3G USB is now your modem, your Win7 machine now functions as a "router"; it is also your DHCP server, but your actual router should be set to Wireless Access Point (WAP) mode or similar. What Netgear router model do you own?

The 192.168.137.1 is the IP Win7 gives my LAN adaptor (Ethernet/Cat5) after enabling ICS.

The model Netgear I have is the WGR614v6.

I find it quite odd that indeed, it did work, until I had to reboot. I have seen that page on the MS site for ICS, really doesn't tell me much.

Make sure your router is not doing DHCP, and not in router mode. It should be in WAP or similar mode. Also make sure that it is in same 192.168.137.xxx subnet... I am assuming that the other XP machines are?

Your DNS, DHCP, etc, settings should all be off in router and on the XP machines they should all point to your Win7 box with 3G card...

You havent accidentally reset router to factory after you got things working the other day??? According to the instructions for your Netgear rtr, you need to set rtr to "Infrastructure" mode which is netgear-ese for WAP! Is it???

As a last ditch effort, I left DHCP on in the router, and BAM! I have internet through out the house.

Bug:

There is suppossed to be a "solved" button at top right next to rep button, but I think admin has it off!

I'm not to sure of the manufacturers rep, but I'm sure the big players in the router biz will follow with their own... a 3G Wireless USB/PCMCIA Cellular Router! Now I know of the personal ones offered be verizon, and other cellular carriers but this is the first of this kind Ive seen! Pretty cool that it will accept either PCMCIA or USB 3G cards!
