I've tried the "EnableRemoteContentSharing" registry edit in both versions 11 and 12 of WMP, and it only seems to work with 11 (in Vista Ultimate, if that matters). In Win7 running WMP 12, I cannot for the life of me get network shares in my Windows Media Library to share with my other computers on my network. I've googled quite a bit and only come up with copies all over the Internet of the same Microsoft KB article about the aforementioned registry edit.

Works with symbolic links

I know this question is a year old, but the only way I found to enable remote content sharing with WMP12 (on Win7 at least) is by using symbolic links (MKLINK).

Use the following command to add a shared network folder to your music library:
  • Run cmd.exe with administrator privileges.
  • Type something like: MKLINK /D "C:\Users\YourUsername\Music\MyLinkedSharedFolder" "\\hostname\SharedFolder"
