As per title, I enlarged my W7 partition.

I usually run Linux Mint, but I also need Windows for work, and a proper installation is obviously better than a slimmed down W7 in Virtual Box.
To be honest is not that I have stuff in there that I need saving, but I seriously dislike just delete the partition altogether and starting with a fresh install again.

I actually left behind W7 for a good year or two because it got increasingly slow, and no wonder, it didn’t have any room in its partition…
I tried to give it a bit of breath making it bigger and giving it much more free space, but at the next boot:

Code:
Windows failed to start.
A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.

2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".

3. Click "Repair your computer".

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer
manufacturer for assistance.

Status: 0xc0000225

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
I can put inside the installation disk, but it’s not seen. It just prompts over and over this message.
Funnily enough I am my system administrator, and I am also my computer manufacturer, and haven’t got any clue! :D
That’s why I am here…

I read in a microsoft help link that it was suggested to recover the partition using TestDisk, but wouldn’t start in Linux (yes, Linux is pretty crap if you have to install a program, it’s never ever an easy-peasy process).

Is there anything else I can do, please?

I had a look trying to find a similar problem to mine, but what helped other people doesn’t help me (namely inserting a W7 disc).

Thanks in advance!

You need to configure your computer to boot to the install disc.

of course, I forgot to add that, it is already configured form the BIOS setup to start from the DVD player, and still doesn’t play the disk.

Yep dual booting on the same disk with Linux is never a good idea

Wat?!? I have had numerous dual boot Win/Lin machines, and in most cases both OS were installed on the same disk.

Hi,
Never again for me
I'd rather sacrifice a little convenience for 2 totally separate installs :)

Beside just how hard is it to shut down and remove and insert another ssd anyway ;)

I also never have more than one operating system on one drive.

Whether it's good or bad, I really don't know but I always had some sort of problem with more than one operating system on the same drive.
It's been so long I don't remember all the problems. I just remember one drive/one operating system.

ThrashZone:
on that disk there are 3 partitions, Windows 7 and two shared data‑only partitions. Shared with Linux Mint that is on another separate physical drive.

Layback Bear:
what do you mean security programs? Antivirus? I think either avast or avg. Possibly the latter. But haven’t logged in the Windows partition (connected to the internet, as at same point I changed the WiFi name and couldn’t be bothered to look for its key) for surely a straight year, and last time I used it last month it was working fine.
Definitely it was due to growing the Windows partition.

Here how my disk looks like in GParted—can’t access Windows so this has to do…

Thanks guys.

yes, I found it as it was the first one, but my Windows 7 doesn’t start at all, I am writing from Linux, and can only show the gparted equivalent output…
I just have avg (I think) nothing else. I used the Windows partition to check Word files, and last year I changed the WiFi SSID so Windows never got connected to the internet. no updates of anything, no viruses. As said, I just used it to check .docx files that in Libreoffice come out totally different.
I logged into Windows last month, and it was working perfectly.

However, I start to think that the DVD player has some problems, though.

Thanks.

I have went back to the ranch and asked for other members to take a look and see if they can give some suggestions.

I have little knowledge using Linux. I don't want to lead you astray.
Do you have a Windows 7 install disk??

Hello my two cents worth have a read about this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/257048-dual-boot-windows-7-linux.html

Now I do remember doing this years ago and got into a but of a pickle only because the machine used to boot to Linux in a heartbeat so I could not move fast enough to pick 7. Now as it has been mentioned you do need to make a partition for the Windows 7 and have done that recently with doing a couple of machines with dual boot 7 &10.

Now what I am going to suggest and it will depend on your budget is to make a clone of your original drive and try the dual boot on the clone - I do this as matter of procedure now because if it all goes south then I just slip the original drive back in and am back in business, and I ma not caught trying to revert back. I am sorry but I find all that fiddling around with this and that to set up a dual boot on the original drive is more grief than I want to put up with.

Now on the clone I set up the space for the dual boot system using Partition Wizard as it describes in that tutorial because it is the easiest way I know how. Now I am assuming as one of the others has mentioned you have a copy of 7 to put onto that partition??

Layback Bear and ICIT2LOL yes, I have the install disk.
Thanks Layback Bear.

ICIT2LOL, I will try tomorrow because it’s my birthday and I don’t want to spend it in front of the pc
Thanks for that explanation. I have a third 2Tb hard disk to sell, and I can use that to clone.
I haven’t read at the link yet, but I know that GRUB won’t be happy. That guy more often than not is a real pain. I will read later, thank!

Now just out of curiosity the Linux boot I am assuming it has been used for some time but if not then I would personally would try reversing the order of install say 7 first then Linux and transfer the Linux install/data from the original Linux dsik partition on the original drive.

Windows 7 has always been the first. There was a time long ago when another Linux installation coexisted with Windows 7 on the same hard drive (just after Windows) and as I deleted it 6 or 7 months ago (but Windows was still working after that) I decided the other day to enlarge the W7 partition to make it breath. It was literally in the same place of all the free space that is shown in the Windows partition now. The second hard disk came last year, when a faulty set of SATA cables (all two went bang at the same time) made me think something major happened to the hard drive, so I bought another one, and installed the Linux I am using now. As it was a newer version and it was better customised, I continued using this one, and deleted the other one which was an uglier copy.

Having installed and run multiple OS'es on the same hard drive for years, I cannot but wonder whatever gave the critics the bizarre idea of one disk/one OS. If problems arise, they are NOT caused by two (or more) operating system coexisting on the same drive.

As to the matter at hand: what does it mean that "installation disk" is not seen? Installation or REPAIR disk? Those two are NOT the same. Is ANY CD or DVD recognized on booting? Would a Linux Mint DVD be recognized?

Try enabling APIC in BIOS. Some people have seen that work.
Also, try booting in SafeMode; press F8 repeatedly during booting process, and eventually you may be able to isolate the problematic driver or program.

Just so I have this right just how many drives are connected up?? because I have got a bit lost here. Personally I would disconnect all but the C: drive and get the 7 install right first.

2 Drives,
a Windows + data partitions and
a only Linux one.

I have the Windows 7 installation disk. And the message is asking for that one.

I got a massive wave of work so I cannot afford to play with partitions as for now, I will try all that as soon as I finish!

And yes genetics73, I always had in one drive 2 or 3 OS’s, and never had any problem. Actually, by experience more problems arise when different OS’s are on different drives.
Mine is now on a different drive just because I thought the first one with Windows was dead, so I bought a new one and installed Linux Mint 17. Then, it turned out to be just a faulty SATA cable, and the old Samsung Spinpoint magically reappeared. The second partition you can see in th eGParted screenshot used to be reserved for Linux Mint 13 (I believe) and the last one for Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

Thanks, I will keep you all updated!
