Hi Friends.

If i am not in the right sub-forum, then please move it to the correct position (thx)

I would like to keep my Epson Perfection 1640SU Scanner and therefore i would like to know how to install the proper driver. The Epson sites only provides an stone-old Vista 32 Bit driver. The driver installs without any message, and i even can select the Scanner in the Twain Menu in my Paint Program, but when pressing on the startbutton then comes "An error occures while trying to open the Data Source". Hardware Manager says "No Driver installed"....I'm gettin' mad...

I am using Windows 7 PRO - 64Bit (full, no RC) and need a little help from you.

I've just been to the site and expanded the vista 32 bit driver and it seems as though the driver is not a signed driver, and therefore wouldnt install on W7 64BIT OS you could try the Twain driver version 5.53A it seems to be a signed one - to make this possible you will have to install it in compatibility mode with xp otherwise it wont install, because of a OS mismatch, also note it says on the site the scanner has to be disconnected from the pc while installing the driver, anyhow to install the driver do the following :
To install a driver OR program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.
Otherwise you will have to turn off signed driver checking which is not recommended - you can find instructions for this by typing something similar to this in the forum search .
I have just found out 32 bit drivers wont install on a 64 bit OS in any case

Same problem here... tried the suggested solution, but it didn't work... Should I dump my scanner now? Shouldn't I have been installing a 64bit OS at all? Seems the Windows world still isn't quite there, my MacBook works fine with 64bit OS :(

Edit: There is a solution, though it costs: VueScan from http://www.hamrick.com/
And to relativate the MACOS statement: I have to use the same there ;)

There is another option....

With the scanner connected, open Device Manager and right-click the Scanner/Unrecognised Device & select 'Uninstall'. Next, click the 'Scan for hardware changes' icon (magnifying glass) and when prompted, click to check automatically for updates.

This will search Windows Update for a possible driver and should work, it has for me with a very old scanner.

Just wait until windows 7 is officially released. Manufacturers are still working on drivers, they are added to windows update daily.
On friday I tried to install a 10 or 12 year old epson stylus color 600 printer. No way. Only the usb to parallel port adapter was recognized.
Yesterday I tried again, and was very surprised that windows found and downloaded the printer driver automatically.

I was able to modify the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo driver to work with my 1640SU under Windows 7 x64.
Here's the driver: Epson America, Inc. - Downloading File Page

Open it with 7-Zip (or whatever you use), extract the file named _winzip_, extract the files contained in _winzip_ using 7-Zip (or whatever you use).

Open Es27.inf and replace all instances of USB\VID_04B8&PID_011B with USB\VID_04B8&PID_010A and save and close the file.

Now go to the Device Manager, right click your scanner, Update Driver and Software...
Browse my computer..... and use the folder you extracted _winzip_ (with the now modified Es27.inf) to.

That should do it, worked great for me.

hm, I successfully installed the driver, but in Applications the scanner is still not available. It is named "2400" under Hardware though... When I doubleclick it under "devices and printers" I get a message that I need a WIA driver...

Unless the scanner had native support for WIA drivers, which it doesn't, thus the hacked drivers, you're not going to be able to use the scanner under Windows' WIA supset rules. You'll have to use the scanner through its own software.

I'm in the same boat with my Nikon scanner as I too had to use hacked drivers to get it to work under Windows 7. It works, but just not with Windows WIA drivers. Luckily the software for my scanner works with the hacked drivers.

I would suggest you install the rest of the software that came with the scanner (if it'll install) and use it for your scans. Otherwise... :(

Good luck

hm, I think for Applications I'd need the TWAIN driver, and that was what I thought the hacked one is... The old twain driver doesn't install, that was the source of the problem

Hmmm...have you tried installing the Epson software and doing a scan. I would have thought thats why the hacked drivers were created, otherwise they're useless.

Let me know.

Question...

What happens when you try the hacked drivers with the rest of the scan software? i.e have you tried the Photoprint/Smart Panel software with the hacked drivers?

Since you can't use the WIA drivers, you'll need something like the Smart Panel software to operate the scanner. I'm familiar with the epson's scanners as I have an Epson Perfection 2400 which is (thankfully) fully supported under Windows 7 64-bit. I was looking to see if you could just use the scan software part of it for it for your scanner, but the software includes the drivers as well so...

The other option you have is to use Vuescan from Hamrick. The program allows you to use your scanner on a 64-bit OS through its software by providing its own 64-bit driver. The software does have more options and tweaks than the standard software shipped with most scanners but will set you back $39.99 for the Standard edition or $79.99 for the Pro edition. You can try the 30-day trial version to see if it works with your scanner and this is something you might like.

Good luck.

What is the problem with the WIA drivers? I have no problem with them though I've only used them for test purpose.

Try uninstalling any existing Epson Scanner programs then proceed with the steps PCSPECIALIST gave us in post #9.

When unzipped, the exe file may fail to launch... select it from the extracted files to run it.

Pay special note to "Open Es27.inf and replace all instances of USB\VID_04B8&PID_011B with USB\VID_04B8&PID_010A and save and close the file" (there are three instances of this string in the file... choose find/replace all and save the file).

I've been initiating scans via the on-screen shortcut icon that is generated, as the 1640SU start button is spotty as to bringing up a smart panel, whereas the shortcut icon has been working for me 100% of the time so far. The 2400 panel program allows you to choose Fully Automatic, Home, or Professional modes, replete with adjustments, profiles etc.

Thanks again PCSPECIALIST!

Re-reading these posts gives me the impression that tautau "might" have missed something with regards to getting the "hacked" driver to work and thus may be trying to use the WIA driver mode which "may" not work, even if you manage to get the drivers and scanner to work.

@ tautau,

I would suggest you take another look at the instructions given by pcspecialist and pghyndman to see if you missed something.

Good luck.

FYI - I just installed my Epson 2400, obviously using the same drivers that were hacked to get the 1680 to work; at any rate I am able to use WIA with my un-hacked drivers on the 2400.

However, I cannot get my Nikon Scanner to work with WIA using hacked drivers for it. Though the scanner works and does what I need it to do, it won’t do it under WIA, possibly due to the "hacked" driver.

My point. Don't be surprised if WIA doesn't work with hacked drivers, but that's a moot point since you can use Epson's software to do your scans as well.

To see if WIA is working go to Control Panel, Devices and Printers, right click on the scanner and click "Start Scan". The scanner will either open up the scan panel (WIA works) or you will get an error saying "You need WIA drivers for this device".

Again, this is a non-issue since the hacked drivers will allow the scanner's software to work thus you will be able to do your scans from there.

This is just FYI on WIA, nothing more.

Good Luck.

Do you know how to do this for the Epson 3200 scanner?

Thanks
