Solved Error (0x8007042B - 0x2000D) when attempting upgrade from Win 7 to 10

I am trying to upgrade a computer from Windows 7 Pro 64-bit to Windows 10:

Dell Optiplex 9020
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, SP 1

8 GB of RAM

I updated all my drivers, via Dell Command Update before attempting the upgrade (except BIOS, which I tried to update twice and it failed both times). And before the upgrade attempt, I also uninstalled my security software and a number of old applications, and unplugged the computer from all peripherals except the mouse, keyboard and ethernet connection.

And after doing this, my computer failed twice to upgrade to Windows 10, with the same error message each time:

“0x8007042B - 0x2000D
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation”


Initially all the upgrade processes looked good, and the Win 10 upgrade process (via Microsoft Media Creation Tool 1909) shut down my computer and went to a screen where it said:

“Installing Windows 10
Your PC will restart several tunes. This might take a while.”

And it got to about 31% complete (this is about the same place it got to both times I tried to upgrade to Win 10), and then it stopped and reverted back to Windows 7 and booted back to my desktop.

See if we can help! Need to run Microsoft's System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) & peruse the relevant logs.
AutoSURT64 is SURT automated with CBS folder copied to desktop when it completes. CheckSUR.log which it generates is temporary in it's default location which is the CBS folder.
Please download & run AutoSURT64 from my OneDrive,
Please download Microsoft's SetupDiag, place on desktop and run. place log it creates in CBS folder on desktop. Delete the .cab files from the CBS folder if there are any, zip the cbs folder and upload please.

logs will point to issues to fix.

How much free space you have on your drive?

That is/was my next question.
OP states he removed apps, etc. May b run disk cleanup extended /verylowdisk if short on free space.

CleanInstall,

If you are using an SSD, there is a known problem caused by a RAID incompatibility on Dells. Try putting the drive on a SATA connector, e.g. the one from the DVD/optical drive. Worked for me! Let us know how it goes...

210 GB of free space. It's not an SSD drive.

First rule is to disconnect ALL other drives (SATA or power cable) from MB.
Download the Win 10 iso and extract all files and folders to a folder (My suggestion is to use 7zip)
If you have a Antivirus, disable it. Run setup from running Win 7.

setupdiag is Microsoft tool for issue upgrading from win7 to win10.
SURT is system update readiness tool, you run it to see if your system has issues that prevents upgrade.
Both produce logs, setupdiag.log and checkSUR.log

Event logs record events taking place in the execution of a system in order to provide an audit trail that can be used to understand the activity of the system and to diagnose problems.

Well, I was finally able to upgrade to Win 10. I had to choose to not keep files and settings, and then the upgrade went well. Thanks to everyone for your help!

Problem Solved SATA and SDD were the Cause

After hours of struggling. I disconnected all other drives except for the SSD which was the OS drive.
I set SATA to emulate AHCI not RAID.
Moved drive to first SATA port.


Ran upgrade successfully!!
