Error 80073712 when trying to update to SP1

I get error 80073712 when trying to apply the SP1 update to Win 7. This has been a problem for a long time but since it did not impact what I was trying to do on my computer, I never chased it down to get a fix. Now it is a problem as I cannot install some new software until I update to SP1. I’ve searched the ‘net and ran SUR tool, SFC/Scannow and other hotfixes.

I have only one file (I think) that remains corrupted. My CheckSUR report lists one manifest file that shows ‘unavailable repair file’. I have attached the CheckSUR log and the persist log that shows how bad it was before applying the fixes.

SFC/Scannow returns Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

My system is Win 7 Home Premium, 64 bit.

Can you help me fix or replace this one file?

Hello and welcome drboys first up I would be trying this
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2 (if you are going to use the /r switch there is no need for the /f switch)
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs – you can leave out the /r switch in ckdsk if you feel it not necessary
if this does nothing then see this

Thanks for the response. I ran chkdsk/f, sfc/scannow and both returned no issues found and no integrity violations. I had already worked through the options on the second recommendation, but ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter again. That returned 'Windows Update Error 0X80073712 (2017-02-01-T_12_38_20A) Not Fixed; Security Settings, service registration, problems installing recent updates all showed Fixed.

I remain a prisoner of one manifest file preventing the SP1 update. Is there a replacement file for the one identified in the CheckSUR file?

I extracted the latest CBS Persist report. I was denied access to the CBS Log even though I am signed in as the administrator. I also tried to upload the report but was denied. Hope the Persist log helps. It was huge and I had to zip it to get it to upload.

Here are the updates installed on 2010-07-05:

7-5-2010 Updates Installed.PNG

I am not sure where to look beyond the Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features\Installed Updates to find any that failed to install. It appears the complete list before I filtered on the 2010-07-05 date all installed okay. Is there another place to look for failed installations?

Thanks again for your help.

I selected this update in the Installed Updates list and chose uninstall. After a short time, I get an error message saying "An error has occurred. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled." The update KB979900 is still on the list. Is there another way to try to uninstall this?

Running sfc / scannow turned up no security violations. Here is what showed on the screen. Not sure if a separate log file is made or where to find it.

Hi Darl,
you gotta luv MS:sarc:.
The KB that causing the problem relates to NetFramework.
Can you goto to progarms/features, then top left click on features a smaller window will open..
You will see Netframework listed can you Expand it and enable all, if neccessary

REBOOT

now run the NF repair tool, from here

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135

Reboot after its finished, try SP1.

If that fails it might be easier and certainly quicker to perform a clean install, which will include SP1, if so run run this tool, copy/paste the output.

I made the change to the Netframework as recommended, rebooted, and ran SP1 update again. Same failure. Same manifest file unavailable to repair.

I ran the second tool and below is the output.

How do I perform a clean install w/SP1 already included?
