Hello Jack in the specs at bottom left it is showing he has an Asus desktop though no model number which would be helpful even if only for the motherboard details

I filled out the specs based on the system info program output. I am on an ASUS desktop, even though I saw on one of the reports that they called it a laptop.

I have run some of these diagnostics and attempted to update SP1 with my antivirus software turned off. It still did not work. I have it turned back on now.

I appreciate any other ideas on how to fix this problem. I thought the last item I tried may have worked (the Netframework settings). One update installed ( a windows security update) but not SP1. It failed due to the same error code and after running the hotfix and checking CheckSUR log, it was still the same manifest file that cannot be repaired.

Roy suggested perhaps a clean Win7 w/SP1 install. Not sure how to do that. Would it also delete all of my programs and data if I go that route? I have saved my data files but have not completed a new backup of the programs.

Ok mate well you are probably best off making an image of the system onto an external drive see this
Imaging with free Macrium it is also a good tool for when the system is fixed up and you run it on a regular basis.

Now the clean install we can walk you through that - have you got the original installation media? -?- a Microsoft DVD?

Personally and I have said this quite a few times I like to install onto new drive rather than having to go to the trouble of saving stuff and then cleaning or wiping the drive because I do not like just formatting it before an install. I do this simply because I like to know that no remnants of the original drive OS are left behind. This is an opportunity to do so onto an SSD but the choice and budget are yours of course.

If you do not have any installation media then you can download a genuine ISO from here Microsoft once you have that you just need to make a bootable disk or stick and install from that. You will of course need the activation code for the version that you have on the machine and you can fid that on the sticker or use this
Product Key Number for Windows 7 - Find and See the Showkey option is good.

As I said we can walk you though the procedure but this will give you an idea of what to do

I have a Windows 7 Recovery Media disk that came with the desktop. It is a DVD that ASUS provided. But that one does not have SP1 on it. Do I have an option to get a Win7 w/ SP1 already on it to load from Microsoft or somewhere else?

Also, I ran the Showkey to find the Product Key. I also checked the outside box of my desktop for a tag which I found. The Product Key on my desktop case sticker does not match the product key found by Showkey. If I move forward with this option, which key do i use?

I'm also waiting to see if there are any other ideas to fix my corrupted manifest file before I go nuclear on the machine...

Darl now that is possibly a worry that the keys do not match and if I were you I would post the issue in that key finder tutorial - Brink will have a better idea of what to do than I do.

Now until this has been sorted I would not do anything with the machine. Just as a by the by did you buy this machine new? or did it come as a refurbished one? Now it could possibly be if this is a used and/or refurbished machine that the seller has put a non genuine copy of Windows on

The tag you said is on the side of the machine does it look like the ones shown in that Showkey tutorial?
When you go to the tutorial and get to Option 1 there are a three examples of what the sticker will look like and it will have what version the OS is and if it is an OEM copy just what do you see on that label/sticker? and just what does that recovery disk look like for example is it branded Asus or Microsoft?

We need to find out just what you have got first before we go any further.

The machine was purchased new from Best Buy. No indication it was refurbished - certainly wasn't presented that way. The sticker on the side is like what was shown on the tutorial just like the first label under Option 1, Step 1. The OEM name is Asus so it seems authentic. The recovery disk is branded Asus and was sealed with a bar code/number on the seal that does not match the sticker on the machine either. Not sure whether it should or not.

Ok Darl still seems odd to me that the sticker on the machine by Microsoft should be the code that is tied to that board, and the Showkey software should bring up the same 5x5 code. Did you as a matter of interest run the Magic Jelly Bean software too?

If not give it a run and see what the code comes up with it and if it is the same as the Showkey result then as I mentioned it would be a good idea to post in the tutorial what is happening and see if Brink or someone who knows about this stuff knows what is going on.

That recovery disk heaven knows what is on it it could be just a rescue disk they put in with the machine.

Now there is a test software that Microsoft use to see if the install is genuine or not but lets see what the Magic Jelly Bean comes up with first.

It doesn't matter which key finder software they use it can't read the key on the sticker unless a clean install has been done using that key, otherwise it reads the OEM-SLP key the factory uses to mass install.

There are two keys on factory OEM computers but the only one of use to any consumer is the unique key on the sticker.

I don't care what key finder software it is, it cant read a sticker on the outside of the case, that will only show up if a clean install has been done using the key on the sticker.

He doesn't need to go through all that he has the key on the sticker that's the one that counts and the only one good for anything.

There are at least 3 elements that show this is a non-genuine install.
((1) mind you i've seen this before from bestbuy machines:sarc

I DO NOT believe this to be a non-genuine install, although the initial data points towards it, from the Mgdiag.
This motherboard was used in the Essentio range which pre-dated W7, and i suspect like in my own lappy came with upgrade rights which were performed by BestBuy (1), but very badly, at that time due to lack of experience.
Hence the discs you have, and a verified COA sticker key..

OK, so what does that mean for me now and the error that I am experiencing? Is it a case that SP1 will never install on this machine if it was a Best Buy/ASUS remanufactured? Will the recovery disk not work? Or will I not be able to do a clean install if it comes to that? I'm unclear what a non-genuine install means to me and my current situation?

Now if as Roy has said you have a the activation code and I think what I would do is to get a new drive download the correct version (including the bit version) of the Windows ISO and make a bootable disk or stick and then install from that using the activation code you have. If this goes south then it may mean the copy you have installed under that activation code is non genuine.

In that instance you will still have the original drive to fall back on albeit it's having issues.

Clean Install Windows 7 < there are links in this tutorial to get that ISO and s you are running Home Premium 64bit you just need to make sure the ISO is also just that some are tempted very unwisely to get a "higher" version of Windows only to find it fails.

But it is your budget and your choice - just remember that you will need to clean or wipe that original drive to make sure it does not have any remnants of the old install on it to interfere with the new install - that is my personal way of doing things though. If this is the way you want to go then now might be a good time to back up all your personal data onto sticks or external drives.

Now set your updates to NEVER

REBOOT

check that the update service has stopped

controlPanel >> administration tools >> services>> scroll down to Windows updates see if its stopped
if not stop it.

now run the KB
Reboot

reset updates to automatic
try SP1.

If that fails
please run this last resort Netframework cleanup tool

try SP1.

If the above have failed please run a repair install

Both of the Updates available at the link you provided say they are not for my computer when I tried to run them. I don't have SP1 (which is the root of this problem), does that make a difference?

Have you made a system image if NOT please do so.

Right been reviewing the thread what MAY be causing the probem
You have 2 versions of Office installed, missed that first time round
Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 - 100 Genuine
Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 - 100 Genuine

please delete one, T/f the files before hand
(the system image i asked you to make earlier wil be your back-up)

Try Sp1 after a
REBOOT.

If that fails
i will provide you with a W7 WITH SP1 included.

I did a full back up using Windows Backup command. Is that adequate or should I use the Macrium mentioned earlier in this thread? And regarding the MS Office - should I do an uninstall or just delete the folder?
