Internet Explorer stops working every time I want to send a webpage shortcut to the desktop and I get the following error code. The shortcut is actually placed on the desktop but the error code keeps reoccurring. Is there something that I'm doing wrong? Or is there something that I need to do to stop this problem from recurring?

If you go to \User\Desktop folder and right clik and create a new shortcut and enter any url, do you get the same results?

If I right-click on the desktop, and select new, then click shortcut, it crashes before even asking for a URL. However, it does place a new shortcut on the desktop that says 'new shortcut'

I am curious as to whether this is only happening on the desktop, or if it also happens when inside a folder, ie...User/Desktop or User/Documents...could be a problem with the Windows Desktop Manager....

I also have intermittent problems using Microsoft office 2003 (specifically, Word and Excel). However, it's not a Internet Explorer error and it doesn't happen all the time. I might be wrong but, I don't believe that it's related.

the problem appears to be with the Windows Explorer,...not the Internet browser, if you have problems with the browser, try upgrading or removing the current version...

I thought Windows Explorer was an Internet browser. I'm currently using Windows Explorer 8, wondering if upgrading to Explorer 9 could solve it. Before I do that I'll probably check some of the Explorer 8 forums to see if it's a known problem. Thank you for pointing me in that direction. I'll definitely update this thread one way or the other.

The browser is Internet Explorer (IE).

Windows Explorer is the graphical shell that provides your taskbar, desktop icons, the Start menu and the windows for browsing your local drives.

Thank you for the information. Sometimes I think I know enough but then it's usually enough get me in trouble. I am more of a user and don't really understand much about the architecture of operating systems/browsers. But I love to keep learning.

I did download Explorer 9 and got the same problem. So, search goes on
