Error trying update to service pack 1 Windows 7 Premium

Hi guys, first of all, sorry for my english, i'm from Portugal, and i see that in this forum the people maybe can help me.

So, the problem that i have is when i try update my windows 7 to Service Pack 1 in Windows Update.

I leave here a print of what show in my pc.

*Clean out all of your App Data> Local>Temp...
Start > Run > %temp% > ok > Organize > Select all.> Organize > Delete > You may be asked to
"Try again" or " Skip"

* Run the SFC /SCANNOW command. This will check and repair if necessary any critical Windows system files.
Click on Start/All programs/Accessories then
Right click on Command Prompt option and select 'Run as administrator'.
At the command prompt enter: SFC /SCANNOW

Well, the System Update Readiness Tool has identified the problem on your computer (two corrupt files) and fortunately, these can usually be fixed very easily. Please refrain from trying anything else at the moment, as any resets etc. won't be effective until AFTER we have fixed these two corrupt files, and may destroy evidence.

Anyway, I just need to get the answer to two questions before I can create the fix for you.

1: Are you running a 32bit or 64bit copy of Windows. Have a look at this tutorial to see how to find out: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/515-system-type-32-bit-x86-64-bit-x64.html

2: Which version of Internet Explorer are you running? Version 8, or version 9? It doesn't matter whether or not you actually use Internet Explorer, I just need to know which version number you currently have installed Please don't attempt to change this (eg DO NOT attempt to install or uninstall IE9. Just tell me what you currently have installed)

And I have the files to copy for folder servicing/packages

I change my permissions, but i cant copy nothing to there, tell me that i dont have permissions. I check all items of permissions and i still cant. Is another solution to copy the right files to that folder. With Linux i can ?


The version of my Internet Explorer is 8.

*Please stop trying that method. I do know the methods of fixing that error, and I shall employ them. I didn't tell you to re-install because I knew how to properly fix this error.

If you manually change permissions and ownership in the Windows folder, those files are no longer protected from infection and harm by Windows Resource Protection. If I find evidence that either permissions or ownership have been changed in the Windows folder, due to the increased risk of infection and identity theft, all I shall do is ask you to Clean Install.

Please attempt nothing else because I do know how to fix this problem, and what you are attempting to do at the moment is extremely dangerous.

Also, for most .cat and .mum files, there are two files with differing contents for each file name.

Because this is an Internet Explorer file, there are four sets of contents per file name. Can you guarantee to me that you are using the correct contents for your file name? Only a 25% chance of that, statistically.

Now, if you please answer both of my previous questions, I shall show you the safe method to fix this.

Please respond to niemiro's question as to whether you have a 32 bit or 64 bit version.

What really helps to better help you is to have fully filled out System Specs.

Here is how to fill out those system specs.
Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (3rd item in the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use SIW or Speccy or System Info

Add the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
“system manufacturer” block, for example,
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on the SAVE CHANGES button.

When you fill out the system specs then your system specs go with every post of yours.

We do not need to search for where you posted info but rather we just click on the little system spec area.

Don't worry about it. If you received permissions errors, it means that you didn't undo permissions completely, and so those files are still protected

In fact, that solution was in essence correct. You do need new copies of the files. But instead of directly modifying the contents of the Windows folder, it is much safer to give the files to Windows, which can inspect them, and then Windows can insert them safely. However, Windows does not inspect their contents. If you give it the incorrect contents, Windows no longer thinks it corrupt, and may well install quite happily - the wrong components, yes, but installed, yes - and then your computer is in a right mess!

Anyway, here is how to do exactly what you were trying to do, safely.

WARNING! This fix was created specifically for this user! If you are not this user, do not follow these instructions!

Download the attached .zip file. Inside it, will be two folders, Packages and Manifests.

Create these folders if they do not already exist: C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages\ and C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\winsxs\Manifests

Extract Packs.zip onto your Desktop. Please place the contents of my Desktop\Packages in C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages\ and my Desktop\Manifests in C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\winsxs\Manifests. (For you there are no manifests. Just move on)

DO NOT place the .zip file in that folder, or the folders themselves. Make sure that a lot of files are in each of those Checksur folder.

Re-run the System Update Readiness Tool, and get me another copy of C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.

Also, please retest Windows Updates (with fingers slightly crossed, no matter how much we both know that that won't help! lol.)

Well, corruptions fixed! If I were you, click "Check for Updates" again, to force a re-fresh. If SP1 still doesn't appear, install all other updates, and keep doing this until SP1 does appear, or you are told twice in a row that no more updates are available, and then check for the presence of SP1. To do so:

I guess in one sense you are doing that when you type into the search box. In other words, hitting either the WIN key or the rb: will put the focus in the search box so that you can just start typing away. When yo hit Enter, then automatically the top program is the list of programs shown above the search box is executed. Nearly always, there is only the one program choice.

If you type only cm, you get a couple of entries for the control panel, but when you type cmd, you get cmd.exe under the Programs category.
