The system in questions is a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, that I tried updating to Window 10. The initial problems are at this link:

Windows 7 upgrade to Windows 10... - Windows 10 Forums

Running the "Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86.msu" results in many errors, that prevent the updating. Partial content of the "CheckSUR.log" file:

Both the manifest and catalog files in red above state "corrupt", but they do exists in the referenced folder. Opening the manifest file in notepad shows a blank page, so, it is corrupted.

Randomly checking the other missing manifest files show that they do exists and the files content is not blank. There's no way that I could check all over a thousand of them. Based on the result of the random sampling, is it safe to say that others are a OK and the missing errors are due to KB4038777 manifest and catalog corruption?

Regardless of the Windows 10 update, that may never take place, the Windows 7 system needs to be fixed. Windows update will not work correctly and may cause issues. At the moment, there are no issues with running this system, that had been installed about six years ego.

What would be the workable/best way to fix the corrupted manifest and catalog files:

  1. Download KB4038777 update, extract its content, copy/paste the extracted manifast and catalog files to "...servicing\Packages" folder
  2. Run the "repair fix, based on Brink's excellent tutorial, Windows Update - Reset - Windows 7 Help Forums

My preferred method would be #1, but I also don't want to run the KB947821 for over two hours, that will result in another long list of corrupted/missing manifest or catalog files. The repair option probably would take less time, just don't know, if it would fix all of these errors.

TIA...

As you want to move to Win 10 crap OS, my suggestion is:
- Do a Win 7 repair installation. It will reinstall win 7 and keep your data and programs. Don't run the Win 7 updates.
Repair Install - Windows 7 Help Forums
- From win 7, run Win 10 setup.

Hi Cr00zng,

Until you post the complete SURT log there's NO way we can tell which specific updates are causing all the problems.
Even from the snippit there are at least 3, so just using option 1 will NOT clear up the problem.
NOT surprised it took over 2hrs to run 1100+ errors
the new style cumulative update proceedure - is a pain, especially when checking logs and fixing the reported errors.

Mega is correct it will be quicker to do a repair install, considering this is a productive machine

Hi Hawkman....

It is a productive machine and probably will stay as Windows 7, after running the repair. Mega is not the reason, it's just probably better at this point for this machine.

The chances are this machine will be a backup system in couple of week, after the new Windows 10 system is built. Such is life for systems in small companies...

Thanks for your help and Happy New Year!:party:

If you will do a Repair install of Win 7, disable Windows updates and use the offline updates MS releases SP2 for Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums

Then set WU to Manual on services and Never check on WU page.
For Windows, only install the Security only updates.
I manually run WU to look for office updates.
