Here's Your Fix
As soon as I installed ESET smart security today, I experienced network file sharing issues. Searching for a solution, I came upon this post, but unfortunately, it didn't help.

After tinkering around with the firewall settings, I figured out how to enable file sharing accross my local network while maintaining ESET's firewall protection.

1. Switch to Advanced Mode by clicking Toggle Advanced mode in the lower left corner of the main window.
2. Click on Setup tab > Personal firewall > Advanced Personal firewall setup and make sure the filtering mode is set to Interactive mode.
3. Go to Rules and zones and click Setup under Trusted zone and make sure that Allow Sharing is checked. ClickSetup under Zone and rule editor and click on Toggle detailed view of all rules
4. Uncheck the two following default rules; Block Incoming NETBIOS Requests and Block Outgoing NETBIOS Requests
5. Now create those two same exact rules again using any name of your choice by clicking New with the only difference that under Address you should only have Networks automatically marked as untrusted NOT All.

*** Please make sure that you have sharing enabled in Network Sharing Center.

Basically instead of blocking NETBIOS accross all networks including the Trusted, we're only blocking it on the public (untrusted) thereby allowing file sharing to function on your local network.

I just joined this forum specifically to post this, so I really hope it helps you guys

Yeah and appreciated, but still doesn't work for me.

ESET support is working on the issue for the next firewall module (1052) which should be out soon apparently.

also, for just a while that i jumped to interactive mode i kept receiving messages wheather to allow or deny communication with some locations :sarc: wouldn't automatic mode with exceptions be better?

step five is take the rule you just edited. create two identical new rules making sure the untrusted not all networks are blocked. You can also go to eset and they have another way of making the sharing work

While ive found this solution to work fine can i ask why its suggested we create new rules rather than just edit the existing ones?

Ive had to do this because my media streamer couldnt browse my PC with the firewall running. The windows firewall works fine but for some reason the Eset one wont.
Its probably a combination of W7/Eset and my streamer rather thna just Eset but i havent had any problems under XP.

Well, i got home today and found Eset had disabled its firewall because it wasnt functioning. Thats just great considering i had turned off the W7 firewall yesterday.
So, almost 1 hour with no protection. Thanks Eset.

Just want to say that since ESET released an update to their firewall (1052) that apparently fixes the firewall issues with sharing folders in Windows 7, I decided to give ESS another chance. I installed on both systems here and so far I am not having any problems with sharing folders over the LAN. Seems they did indeed fix the issue.

Thought I would post this to be fair to ESET, as it took a little while, but they did what they said they would and fixed the issue. I will post if I have another issue, but for now it's working for me again. So, back to ESET for now. ;)

Back and forth between ESET and Vipre...fun stuff. Oh well, gives me something to do.

glad to hear that problem was resolved. It put a lot of people off what is otherwise a terrific security suite.

Yeah...so far it's running very well and no issues with sharing at all. Just checked again and boom, works every time. Quite happy with the fix considering I purchased a 2 year license for ESS.

I'm still keeping Vipre on the backburner just in case though...;)
