Eset Smart Security

Just want to say that since ESET released an update to their firewall (1052) that apparently fixes the firewall issues with sharing folders in Windows 7, I decided to give ESS another chance. I installed on both systems here and so far I am not having any problems with sharing folders over the LAN. Seems they did indeed fix the issue.

Thought I would post this to be fair to ESET, as it took a little while, but they did what they said they would and fixed the issue. I will post if I have another issue, but for now it's working for me again. So, back to ESET for now. ;)

Back and forth between ESET and Vipre...fun stuff. Oh well, gives me something to do.
Thanks for the update. Let me try it as well as I have nothing to do ATM. ;)

How did you get version 1052 of the Firewall? I installed the latest version of the Security Suite, 4.0.467, and it still has version 1051 of the Firewall. I have updates turned on for the application, and I have tried updating several times but receive nothing.

Turn on "Enable pre-release updates" in the setup. It's still not a "finalized" update.

Well, back to Vipre....ESS just takes too long for scans. It seems the latest update takes even longer for scans than it used to. Oh well, Vipre is an excellent product.

The one problem I found with ESET Smart Security 4.x on Windows 7 x64, was trying to add a rule to the firewall as a non-adminstrative user produced a "Failed to change settings" error. In other words, as a non-administrative user, running a program which accesses the internet, the firewall would popup (interactive mode) and ask if access should be granted, if you check the box to allow ESET SS to remember your choice, it would popup with the error. I always run Windows as a non-administrative user and this error would come up every single time a piece of software accessed the internet. I also noticed a manual virus scan would sometimes come up with "ESET GUI has stopped working" and the entire screen would freeze.

well first of all ... only administrators should only be able to edit security settings in the first place :P... I mean if a virus gets in a guest account that will be able to change security settings... wouldn't that be dangerous?

Im not sure why this should even be a consideration when discussing system security and integrity. What is so difficult with starting your scan, go to bed/school/store, and let it do its thing... a non issue IMHO...

Just stating a fact in a thread I created.

ESS takes too long for deep scans, Vipre does not. I'm using Vipre again now and continue to do so.

I'm really not sure why fans of ESET are so touchy. It's just an AV and I'm using something different now.

Of course, non-admins shouldn't be allowed to edit certain security settings. But from what I saw, ESET expects everyone to use their machine as an admin user if you want to change any settings, because unless you do, absolutely nothing can be changed in the antivirus and firewall. I think a certain group of settings should be admin only, and a subset of settings which are customized based on the user you are logged on as.

When I log on as a non-admin user, I should be able to instruct the firewall to add a rule for my user account to allow MS Office (for example) to always have access to the internet, without logging out, logging in as an admin, allowing access, then logging back in as my non-admin user - then repeat that cycle for every piece of software that wants to access the internet.

Other than this and a freezing problem with the manual scan, I have to say ESET runs fine.

If I can run something that performs a scan faster (even when I'm present), then I would prefer to use that.

The are other issues at play between ESET and Vipre (usage wise), but I'm not going to get into that. I've stated my case and it's best left alone now.

For me the important thing is how accurate the scanning is, not the speed.

I use and like Eset AV (not SS), along with Comodo Firewall, b/c it is fairly light on system resources (except while doing scheduled scans), does not have excessive FPs and seems to catch most malware. It does take seemingly forever to scan my entire hard drive, but, like Tews said, I just let it run overnight for that and it doesn't bother me. The accuracy of the scan is more important to me than speed.

Hey everyone. I'm also having issues with my local network traffic that seem to be caused by Eset SS firewall. In my case, the transfers between my home computers (on a proper gigabit network) went from being a steady 50-80MB/s to a slow 0-14MB/s. While i copy files over from my spare computer (that I leave on 24/7 and use as a fileserver) to my main rig, the transfer starts out really fast for a couple seconds (up to 120MB/s), then the progress bar, speed/time remaining details freeze for a few seconds (during which the bandwidth usage pretty much flatlines) and then spikes up to about 14MB/s for a couple seconds and then freezes and flat-lines, and repeats and repeats. The graph shows quick spikes every 3-5 seconds with nothing in between. It takes me about 30 minutes to transfer a file that normally takes 2. The only way I can get the transfers to be normal is to disable the Eset firewall on both machines (both running win7 x64 ult).

However, and this is the real mind-twister, I found that if I instead get on the fileserver PC and browse to my main rigs shared folder and paste into it, the transfer goes like normal at a steady 50-80MB/s, regardless of if the firewalls are on or not.

I messed with rules and zones and settings for the better part of last saturday and finally gave up and tried reinstalling Eset on my rig. Afterwards, the transfers were back to normal again for a few days, and now they're slow again. I keep the firewall on interactive mode, and haven't denied anything access yet...

I've been running Eset Smart Security on Windows 7 Notebook now for the last 6 months. Trouble free so far. I have to note that as a support technician I repeatedly get called out to PC's running Norton/Kaspersky/McAfee/AVG Free who get infections on a regular basis. In the last 3 years I have only had to look at 3 machines with Eset that have had issues. One where the security had not been renewed for 6 months and was used by a teenage boy, one which had been browsing some online casino websites and had a minor infection (web page redirects) and one which had failed to pick up the AntiSpyware 2009 malware.
Recommending this superb piece of software is good for my customers and although I never get called back because of re-infection it is a door in to provide tech support.
Fab product!
I use Malwarebytes to remove and Dr Web Cure IT on infected machines!

Too much BAD comments reviews.

I was always like Eset products and i was thinking to buy Esetss4,2 year lisence.
BUT everywere i check,in every site and forums,i found/read only NEGATIVES reviews and comments about Eset smart Security 4.
Why is that?
Is esetss4 so awful?
------------------------------------
An extra question.
If i buy and install ONLY esetss4,is this program capable to keep safe my pc?
I will like to use just ONE security software for malware,spyware,virus...everything!
Is that possible?
