Ethernet connection to internet stops every night between 8pm & 1am

I have a strange problem that has me stumped, over the last month my ethernet connection to the internet drops every night between 8pm and 1pm, it either stops completely or works for a few seconds and then disconnects or I get a connection so slow that it's unusable. Other devices connected wirelessly to the router work fine. During the day time ethernet works fine.

I've tried booting in safe mode with networking which sometimes works, I've tried rebooting the router after turning everything off, unplugging phone line etc and waiting 30 secs. I've uninstalled network adapter card (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller) and reinstalled, updated drivers etc, deep scanned for viruses. Removed any new software added in the last month and contacted ISP who reports that my connection is normal. I've also unticked the box 'Allow computer to turn off this device to save power' on the network adapter.

Modem/router is downstairs, pc upstairs and I've been using On Networks Powerline 200 Home Network Adapters to route the ethernet through the power outlet for the last year without any probs and haven't changed anything recently.

When the connection drops sometimes the network icon shows it's disconnected, sometimes not. If I repair the connection I get various error messages at random "the default gateway is not available", "the connection between your access point, router or cable modem and the internet is broken" and sometimes just Windows cannot find any problems.

Welcome to Seven Forums,

I wonder if there are some type of restrictions setup in your router - e.g. amount of bandwidth to use, etc....

Also, are there more Users around those hours? Is it 8pm to 1am and not 8pm and 1pm?

If your wireless devices work between 8pm + 1am, I'd say it's the PLA's. They are affected by noise on the mains. Are there any domestic appliances that switch on at 8pm, especially things with motors eg washing machines, central heating ? Although rebooting and re-pairing PLA's often fixes things, I think it's dirty mains.

PLA's work best on the same ring circuit. Separate circuits are more prone to problems.

Check the access policies built in to your router (probably 192.168.1.1 if you have a Linksys.)

This is probably the longest I've ever had a Windows machine run without having to restore it to scratch. I'm used to restoring to "factory" about every 2 yrs. I've run with Win7 since new in 2009 and only recently (Nov, '14) restored to clean up the machine from all my 'xperimenting. LOL!! I may never need another machine.

Upgraded to 10 when it was still free, then installed 2017 update.
