This might have something to do withy having used a USB iBurst modem which somehow used to network locations - wireless and Local Area Connection 2.
As I understand it I need Local Area Connection (Ethernet) to be Home in order to be able to share files with my BluRay player through a router.
But it is Unidentified Network, Public. The location is not clickable.
I connect to my ADSL modem via WiFi because of there being a passage between the PC and the telephone point.
The router has DHCP switched off, otherwise I lose my Internet connection.
Using 192.168.2.x/24 for the router network. The WiFi is on 192.168.1.x/24.

I've been trying to get WMP to share MKV files. Installed the K-Lite Codec pack, which got WMP to see and to play MKV files. Still won't show them over the network. (Well, not to my BluRay player.)

The BluRay player is an LG, so I installed Nero MediaHome Essentials, and that makes everything work.

And no, I cannot click on "Public network."
"Function Discovery Resource Publication" is not running, the others are. Started it, Ethernet stays Unidentified, Public. Not changeable. But at the moment it doesn't matter, with Nero doing the sharing successfully.

If you want to try making it work without third party apps:
- Change "Function Discovery Resource Publication" to start automatic (delayed) and restart PC.
- Check if it is indeed started after logging in.
- See if you can share now.

I'll have a look, but I doubt that is the problem. I can see all file types except for MKV. That is Microsoft's aversion to MKV. I have heard it is because of no DRM methods with MKV.

I have tried adding the entries to the registry. Made a slight difference. Inbstalling the K-Lite Codec pack makes a much bigger difference. It includes a modified version of WMP. Now all the MKV files show up fine in WMP. They show the length (which they didn't before), you can use WMP to play them. But just don't expect them to show up in a device which is looking at the PC through the Ethernet port.

If I let WMP's Network SHaring Service run, tyhen my BluRay player shows the PC courtesy of WMP, and Nero Home Media. If I access the files through Nero they play. If I try through WMP, the folders are empty. (Of MKV files. The AVIs are there.)
