EVGA Classified vs HOF GTX 780

So I got the new classified 780 today, I am going to use this thread to give my thoughts and benchmarks of the 2 for comparison.

One of the reasons I sent the HOF back was temperatures. I ran the furmark 1080 benchmark on it which lasts for less than a minute, by the end of the test the HOF had reached 98C and I think was still climbing, that to me was not acceptable.

The first thing I did with the Classified was to run the same test. It reached 49C, nuff said.

The Classified is massive, I will post some pics in a bit, it is very well built and looks great.

I was starting to do some benchmarking but the Classified is pretty heavy on power and when I overclocked it and raised the voltage I think it was a bit too much for my aging psu and I am certain it has killed it.

So I had to go out and buy a new psu, I need to fit that in a little while then I can start benching properly.

Nope Solar, unfortunately I had a choice of 1 at the only PC place for miles, otherwise the rig would have been out of action until next week

It's good enough for a single card for sure and gets good reviews but it was not what I wanted. It will do the job for a while until I can get a better one.

The Classified has not beaten the HOF in the 2 benchmarks I have run so far but there is not much in it, in Sanctuary the HOF scored 18200 iirc, the Classy scored 17600. In 3d Mark 11 the HOF scored 14650 iirc and the classy scored 14610, not a lot between them except for temp! The HOF hit 96C in Sanctuary, the Classy hit 57C, I'll take the lower temps over a few points any day, especially seeing as the temps are massively different.

Will run more benchmarks over the weekend, but I think they will be toe to toe in all of them which I am fine with.

With those kind of temps, the HoF wouldn't put those numbers up for long!

What about an *open air* cooling solution which would most likely bring the temps down a considerable amount. I know you would have to take the card apart, but it should not be too difficult. Here is the type of cooling fans I am talking about. They have 2 or 3 fan solutions. It may not look as good as the current card look, but when it comes to heat, what is more important, the look of the card, or how it performs. Besides, it's inside the case and you don't really see it anyway.

Usually I would think drivers play a big role in heat and card usage

I remember a time or two AMD had some drivers that would shoot my GPU up 5% more then it did before

More drivers coming out I think the heat issue will soon disappear just like with AMD's 290x

That's what I thought Kelly, maybe the HOF I had was faulty and the thermal paste was not on right, I would have thought the HOF with it's massive cooler would have run pretty cool.

Cranky, The new Classified I have has 2 X 90mm fans and is so cool it is amazing. Even when fully overclocked to 1293MHz (fully stable) it doesn't reach 60C during benchmarking.
It's nice and cool in the cabin right now and it's idling lovely and cool.
