Explorer crashes when notification area pop up should happen

Whenever a notification area pop up happens e.g. low battery, microphone plugged in, windows explorer crashes and needs to restart. In the situation of low battery, it continually crashes until I either close explorer through task manager, or plug my laptop in. It crashes before the pop up happens, so i dont even see the pop up.

With something like mic plugged in, a restart of explorer is all i need.

But obviously I'd like to have the problem fixed. Any ideas as to what I can do to alleviate the problem?

I use windows 7 64 bit home premium.

Try running from the command prompt "SFC /scannow" It will search explorer.exe (and other system files) for errors and (try to) fix them.
