I followed this tutorial to remove that bar in Explorer then installed qttabbar http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/65416-window-explorer-toolbar-remove.html. After that, this bar showed up.

I uninstalled qttabbar hoping it would go away, but it remained. Any way to remove it? Right click does not work.

That is the standard windows menu bar. Go to "Organise" and uncheck the bar;

If you want to remove it in QTTabBar, then go to "Options", "Misc" and check the "Hide Menu Bar"

That bar is gone, as shown by that picture. Will restoring it, then performing that option, then removing it again work?

Checking or unchecking it will remove or restore it. The same applies in QTTabBar.

Thanks that worked. How can I get QTTabBar to stop hovering a few pixels above the bottom of the bar?

You need to use a different tab image. Here is one I made;

Download it and save it wherever you want.

To use that image go to "Options" "Appearance" and enter the path to that image. The sizing margins are important.

This is what it looks like;

You may still have a one-pixel gap. You could get rid of this, but I have found that trying to do so causes problems with the background colour of the toolbar.

That looks much better! But the tabs are still too high up. I'd rather have messed up background colors than that floating tab.

You can try different margin sizing options.

Or you will have to modify the image to suit. You need software capable of alpha layer editing to do that.

I use Gimp, but this also works;

IcoFX - The Free Icon Editor

This image can also be used as a toolbar background;
