Solved Extensions Added Automatically To Files Question

Greetings,

I just noticed today that all my files have extensions added on to them.

A Microsoft Word document that was was just titled Document (for example) is now titled Document.doc

Same with music and video files - they were just the song title or video name, but now it is Back In Black.mp3 or Star Wars.avi

They still open as they always did, but with Windows 7 updates no longer happening, how did this change happen to my files? Did I maybe click on something and not even realize it?

Even when I save a now like a jpg from online, it will add the .jpg to the file name when confirming that I want to save this file.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

HM

Not sure how it happened, but the option is under the folder options in the control panel. See screenshot.

Hi

Have you just installed a different AV.

most identify the MISSING .file extention as a possible security risk, and will either advise you to change/add this or depending on your settings do it automatically.
Its also possible that any system optimizer program might as well.

They would have an extension all the time or windows wouldnt know how to run them. It sounds as if you had it set to hide extension and thats been changed so you can now see it

Thank you so much. It was exactly that, although I don't remember changing it. It's back to how I had it before. I appreciate your help.
