Hi, when I attach an external hard drive to any machine, (2 TB NTFS recently formatted from FAT32) it takes about 5 minutes to be recognized in several machines.

Any idea how to speed that up?

Thanks!

Did you do a quick format or a full one?

not fast enough
i had the same problem. i ran chkdsk /r from an elevated command prompt, my computer booted normally. mine is a 1TB that is about 3/4 full, and it took nearly 8 hours.
another thing you might try is disabling "boot to usb" in the BIOS. (assuming its a usb drive)
if that doesnt work, unplug the cable before boot, and plug it back in after windows loads.

The format was done through DOS - I forget the commands but it was basically the drive letter then = NTFS - sorry for not being more specific.

It took about an hour so I guess it was a quick format.

There is a lot of data on the drive - do you think I should do a longer format?

I mean its not a big problem just annoying having to wait like 3-5 minutes for the drive to boot....

Thanks!

if you format it, you will lose all your data.
