Howdy

I have a Lacie external harddrive. I think it is 1 TB. Anyway it doesnt get used alot and when I swiched it on today it took ages to appear in My Computer. I had a couple of random Messages from Windows saying I needed to re fromat it before I could use it.

The thing is I dont want to reformat it yet as there is a lot of valluable data on it. I can enter the drive via My Computer but when I try to copy it out the green progress bar doesnt seem to progress. I am trying to copy out a 166GB folder and it says it is going to take about 1 hour. It has said that for a while now and has only transfered 1.28GB in a half hour or so.

Am I in big trouble or is there something I can do to fix it long enough to get the data out.

Thanks

I would say that your drive has a severe problem. It seems to be a hardware problem and I think it's dying. Save your files, as much as you can.

If you can create and boot a Puppy Linux usb or dvd, you can copy out your folder and files onto trusted media, maybe faster than what explorer is doing.

Try copying the items inside the 166GB folder one a a time.

Also, get CrystalDiskInfo and run it. See what it reports about that HDD.
