External Network Access from VMware player

Hi,

I have a VM shared to me by a colleague. I installed VMware 6.0.1 and able to start the VM. Now i want to setup the communication for VM so that i can access the internet from the VM using my Host's connection.

On my host machine, i can use a wired or a wireless broadband connection and gets an IP in the range 192.168.43.X and the IP of my VM is fixed to 10.0.0.Y.

Can anyone pl. suggest what shall be the easiest way to connect my VM to the Internet.

It's been a long time since I used version 6 It is at 10. something now . I usually have the network set at bridged if that does not work you can edit the network settings while you are running the VM , If you still have problems you could always set the ip inside the VM to 192.168.43.200 set the mask at 255.255.255.0 and I'm going to guess the gateway is 192.168.43.1 and set the dns at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. To find the gateway in windows at a command prompt type

ipconfig

and in linux type

ifconfig

OOp's just noticed you said vmware player version 6 is the newest (6.0.1)

Thanks sml156 for your suggestions. But unfortunately some of the application running on VM are bind the the current IP of VM I.e. 10.0.0.36 so if I change the IP of VM my application will stop working.

Is there a way that I don't need to change the IP of VM and still establish the connection between the VM and host and allows my VM to use Internet through host machine.

As suggested, setting the VM's network adapter to bridged usually works. It shouldn't disturb the VM's IP.

I tried that but even after setting my VM's network adapter to bridged, I cannot even ping the VM from the host and vice versa.

I even tried setting my VM's network adapter to NAT and changing the VMNet8 IP address to 10.0.0.1. With this I was able to ping the VM from the host but not able to ping host from VM.

Any suggestions to make it work is appreciated.

Bit of a shot in the dark but if your VM is networked with your colleague's, which it sounds as if it may be, could you use a default gateway of 10.0.0.1 and use his internet connection in the VM?

The host machine I use is a standalone machine (Laptop) connected to internet using broadband. So I cant use Internet from anywhere else.

10.0.0.Y is a LAN side IP and is the nub of your problem. If the VM isn't networked to anything else what is its purpose?
