External USB Hard Drive Problems

I agree with Major Blud, my computer isn't a laptop either and I've tried powered USB-hubs. My problem is solely with Win 7 x64 as Vista 64 worked perfectly (except for the usual Vista flaws). I mailed Acer and they suggest total system recovery. They are as helpfull as usual:(. I'm going to install a PCI USB-card later today.

Edit: Installed the generic $10 PCI-card a couple of hours ago. Just plugged it in and it worked. Apparently Win 7 had drivers for it. I've so far transferred 50+ Gb between all the drives, USB and SATA, in the system and no problems yet.

Win 7 64-bit audio driver is up in Acer's driver section. I'm guessing it's the chipset driver we need.

I Second This:

1.New motherboard (ASUS P755D Deluxe) with Windows XP, all externals work fine.

2. Decided to install Windows 7. Externals no longer work.

3. InstallED updated Chipset driver for motherboard, ALL EXTERNALS ARE NOW RECOGNIZED.

4. Solution = Chipset.

I found another thread which is very detailed about the problem. It appears that Microsoft is aware of it, and may have a fix for us in the near future. It would appear that 64bit addressing is buggy on particular chipsets.

Windows 7 USB external hard drives lose its connection and stops working.

Thanks so much for this info! I have been battling this problem for 2 weeks now and this gives me some hope. Has anybody tried any of the workarounds suggested in the other thread? Any reports of success/failure?

My computer seems not to meet the hotfix requirements. I don't know why. My configuration should be accepted. I’m searching for a solution since I install w7 and I don’t see anything coming.

can you fill in your system specs a little more and maybe me or someone here can help.

the only Req. I can see if this is
windows 7
NVIDIA chipset and at least 4GB of RAM
if you have these it should work.

Hotfix seems to have worked for me

First, thank God I found this site. I was unsuccessful in my searches on MS and this is the only place I found the hotfix (except later when I knew the hotfix number)! I installed the hotfix and so far it seems to be working for me (about 7 gigs transferred--before it would freeze after a few megs).

I'm also interested in seeing whether it fixes the problem where my USB audio codec speakers work for a while and then stop until rebooting.

Perry, I'd imagine that this would fix your USB audio as well. I have a set of Logitech USB headphones that would freak out when connected to the Nvidia USB ports. They worked fine on the PCI card I installed on the machine; and of course they started working fine on the Nvidia USB ports after installing the hotfix.

Yes, it appears to have worked with the USB audio as well. Strange that this problem isn't reported more widely--I would imagine there are a large number of NVIDIA boards out there.

I wish I would have found this sooner myself, I tried all different versions of many drivers and now I have video issues and can't remember what version number worked best on my laptop. I am about to do a clean install to find the drivers that work.

I just tried the fix and it seems to have worked. The only problem now is the speed of transferring files. Win 7 seems even slower than vista at copying files and it also seems to come up with some crazy times for the time remaining. I just copied 15gigs and at first it said an hour this went up to 23 hours back down to 20 minutes and then when it was almost finished this went to 3 hours.

transfer speed can be affected by how large and fragmented the file is. or how fragmented the receiving drive is also could affect the speed. 3rd any other programs running can take away from the speed of the transfer.

Thinking my system met the requirements I downloaded the hotfix. Unfortunately I get the message "This update is not applicable to your computer".

I have an Acer Aspire X1800 (new, which the retailer replaced thinking the USB issue was a motherboard problem), but the same problem still exists on my replacement computer when copying files to a USB external drive. My processor is Intel 2 Quad CPU @2.33 GHz. RAM is 4GB. My IDE ATA/ATPUI controller is NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller.

Can anyone help?

Mike,

I don't guess you'd happen to have a USB PCI card you could put in your desktop do you? I would try that and see if the problem persist...
