Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD

How to Extract Files from the Windows 7 Installation DVD

   Information
This will show you how to extract original files from the retail Windows 7 installation DVD. You can then use these extracted files to replace missing or corrupted system files in your current Windows 7 installation.
   Note
Normally you will find out that you have corrupted system files that cannot be repaired after your run a sfc /scannow command and look at it's log report.
   Tip
If you do not have a Windows 7 with SP1 installation disc, then you can download the latest official Windows 7 with SP1 ISO file at the link below, then create an installation DVD or USB with it.

Microsoft: Windows 7 Direct Download Links

Here's How:
1. Download and install the same free 32-bit or 64-bit 7-Zip program version as your 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7.

2. Use Compatibiliy Mode on the 7-Zip shortcut and check the Run this program as an administrator box.

3. Run 7-Zip, then click on Tools and Options on the menu bar. Next, select (highlight) .wim, and click on the plus button for All users, and click on OK. (See screenshots below)
7-Zip.jpg
4. Insert your retail Windows 7 installation disc into the DVD drive and wait for it to be recognized.

5. In 7-Zip, navigate to your DVD drive letter (ex: E: ) that has the Windows 7 installation disc in it, and double click on the Sources folder. (See screenshot below)
Step2.jpg
6. Scroll down and double click on the install.wim file. (See screenshot below)
Step3.jpg
7. You will now see this for a few seconds as it opens. (See screenshot below)
Step4.jpg
8. Each numbered folder is a different edition of Windows 7. They will vary depending on what type of Windows 7 installation DVD you have. To see what edition is for each numbered folder, select the 1.xml file and click on the Extract button on the toolbar. (See screenshots below)
Step5.jpg

Step6.jpg

9. Copy the 1.xml file to your desktop. (See screenshot below)
Step7.jpg
10. Open the 1.xml file on the desktop. Look for the <IMAGE INDEX="#"> entry and the <NAME>edition</NAME> entry a bit under it in the code (highlighted in red below) to see what Windows 7 edition is for each numbered folder in step 8. (See code box below with an example 1.xml file)
NOTE: This file will open in Internet Explorer by default.

11. Now open the numbered folder (step 8) that is the same edition as your currently installed Windows 7 edition, and navigate to the Windows\System32 folder. You can now select and extract the system files that you need to your desktop. (See screenshot below)
Step8.jpg
12. Verify that each extracted file is unblocked. You can now use the extracted files to copy and replace your missing or corrupted system files in your currently installed Windows 7.

   Tip
You will need to take ownership and set permissions to "Allow" your account "Full Control" of the original file in your current installation before you will be allowed to replace it with the extracted copy.

If the system file is in use and you are unable to replace it with the extracted copy, then:
  • Open a Command Prompt at boot.
  • Do steps 4B to 4D in this tutorial first to verify the drive letter of your Windows 7 drive. It's not always C: at boot.
  • Type in the command below to copy and replace the original file with the extracted replacement file.
Copy /Y "full path of extracted replacement file" "full path of original Windows 7 system file"

For example:
If the extracted replacement uDWM.DLL is on my desktop, then I would use type this in the command prompt at boot and press enter.

Copy /Y "C:\Users\User-name\Desktop\uDWM.dll" "C:\Windows\System32\uDWM.dll"

That's it,
Shawn

Hey Brink,

Long time reader, first time writer.

I recently came in contact with a rootkit called Sirefef.EZ & Sirefef.AD, which took down my Windows Firewall and broke some of the services used to start it, like Base Filter Engine. The service comes back as "Access is Denied" or "Dependency failed to start". After checking SFC for integrity violations, I was a sad panda to find out some files had been altered. As much as I hate System Restore, I went back 48 hours prior to the incident. Unfortunately, the problem still exists. I followed your tutorial and have a list of the broken files and 7-Zip is up with the disc readily accessible. Please let me know what files need to be retrieved.
I also have a Best Buy Geek Squad MRI PE disc that I will use to copy over original files.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Awwtbone, and welcome Seven Forums.

I agree with Golden. When it comes to a rootkit, I think it's best to format and start clean. Afterwards, do a full scan of your system with the free Malwarebytes just to be extra safe though.

Thank you for the warm welcome.

You can love or hate Best Buy, but they have a virus eradication program all of their Geek Squad agents use. Most of the time the software is pretty worthless, but my copy managed to find the virus with their "Replication File Finder" which sweeps the MFT for malicious duplications. After the supposed removal, ESET and paid-for MalwareBytes couldn't find the rootkit anymore.
Even if the virus is still in my system and a clean install is required, I would like the future knowledge of thoroughly understanding the dynamics of repairing system files. Would you mind going through the process anyway? I would greatly appreciate it.

Awwtbone,

You would basically go through your sfcdetails.txt file to see what system files could not be fixed. Next, you would use this tutorial to extract a new copy from your retail type Windows 7 installation disc, and use the yellow TIP box at the bottom of this tutorial to replace the bad copy in Windows with the new copy.

Looking at your sfcdetails.txt file, these are the files that cannot be fixed. If you do not use these default cursors that are included in Windows, then I wouldn't worry about them.
  • C:\Windows\Cursors\size2_rl.cur
  • C:\Windows\Cursors\size2_rm.cur
  • C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-shell-acccursors_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_406675269603c3b4\size2_rl.cur

Can we manually copy system files in Windows Repair Mode over the command prompt, because the system files are so corrupt that the PC won't boot at all? The reason is that I don't want the whole drive C: formatted with clean Windows 7 and lose personal files just because a few vital files are missing.

Hello Dorruk,

Yes, you could do that.

However, if it's only bad system files, you might see if you may be able to run a sfc /scannow command at boot using METHOD TWO in the tutorial below to see if it may be able to repair them automatically for you.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139810-sfc-scannow-run-command-prompt-boot.html
If you do end up needing to do a clean install to fix this, then you could use either tutorial below to copy and paste any needed files from your system to another location before doing so.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html

or

Hope this helps, :)

Hello Jan,

No. This will only affect any system files that you replace.

It really depends on what was found corrupted in the sfcdetails.txt file from the SFC scan, and if you are having an issues or not. If it's to much that is bad, then a repair install should take care of it, but be sure to read the yellow TIP box in the repair install tutorial for what may be affected. As usual, it's best to backup anything that you do not want to lose first to be safe.

Hope this helps. :)

Hello Jan,

Ok thank you

Hello Jan,

You would need to "unblock" the files first, then copy and paste from the desktop only the files that need to be replaced from your SFC log.

Jan,

Did you try to add Group Policy to your Windows 7 Home Premium?

Those are the files that it found to be corrupted and having a hash mismatch. Since your edition doesn't include Group Policy, that would be why.

Adding Group Policy is not going to work. :(

Yes, i installed Group Policy long time ago, i thought it would run fine but it did not run, i already uninstalled it that time. So you didnt see corrupted default system files on my CBS log? What are the group policy files that you have seen on my SFC log? Can i manually delete them?
