I feel as if I have wasted $850 on my HP Pavilion Notebook with 4GB x64 Windows 7 Home Premium.

I bought this laptop so I can have a faster experience for both education, web designing, and games.

However, it is running slow, and I have purchased it only 2 days ago.
I've checked the msconfig, and performance tools.
I've configured the settings except I'm having problem with one!

Performance Options > Advanced > Virtual Memory:
(I believe this is the only way to make my computer go faster since I don't think I'm using all of my ram.)

My Computer Specs:
HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC
AMD Turion(tm) II Dual-Core Mobile M500 2.20 GHz
4.00 GB (3.75 GB usuable) 64-bit Operating System

And my Virtual Memory options are "Automatically manage paging file size for all drivers."

Total paging file size for all drives:
Minimum allowed: 16 MB
Recommended: 5754 MB
Currently allocated: 3836 MB

What should I change my Custom Size settings to?
Initial Size (MB):
Maximum Size (MB):

Can I do this?
Initial Size (MB): 2500
Maximum Size (MB): 5000

Or will that damage my computer?
Why is the recommended: 5754 MB when my RAM is only 4000 MB, does that mean it can run over 4000 MB?

Please help, your help will be greatly appreciated!

Best Regards,

First thing you do when you buy a HP Laptop is remove the massive amount of Bloatware that comes with it, if possible format and install a clean fresh copy of windows 7 but most people don't have a spare copy available

What about my settings?

Like whenever I go in a game it freezes from time to time and lags badly.
And ram requirement for that game is 256 mb. I have 4 GB RAM and some reason I'm lagging.
Can you tell me what I need for the:
Initial Size (MB):
Maximum Size (MB):

Bloatware is a problem with store bought computers, pick and choose what you want. Next because Window 7 takes care of ram and page filing in a different way you might think your ram isn't being used properly. Believe me Windows 7 is doing it correctly, you don't have to tinker with it like on older operating systems. To understand how your ram is being used go to Start and type in resmon and go to memory. Notice the Standby and Free. They are just waiting there for when your system needs them. When you system requires more ram to be used BAM it's got it. I don't know of a better way to adjust it or adding a 3rd party program that will do it better. After you did your checking in msconfig/start up, choosing what you want at start up, (use caution) and you still are running short of ram you just need more ram. Do yourself a favor and don't tinker with it. You can find volumes of information on Windows 7 in the Tutorials at the top of each page and of course posting questions here.
Welcome to the Severn Forum.

Not sure what settings you mean but if it was installed by HP and not Microsoft you won't need almost all of them.
Formatted my wifes Acer Laptop and installed Win 7 with no Acer bloatware and it is running like a charm

Well for one, don't touch your virtual memory settings. Virtual memory (as it is described there) is for when you run out of real ram. With 4 gig it wonlt be much of a problem.

Second, what video chip did you get with that machine? They can vary from unusable for games to barely usable in the $800 price range... It will probably NOT ever be a speedy gaming rig at that price.

What you guys have to do is forget about all the bloatware and msconfig.
I've already done that! I want to know the settings for:
Initial and Maximum MB! For paging, I already tried searching in google.

That's my problem, I don't know how much to set in Initial and Maximum!
I already gave enough information of how much I need to set.
You guys aren't giving me an specific answer.

Simply all I want is how much for Initial and how much for Maximum rather than a whole explanatory of why my computer is slow.

That's the whole point I made this thread!

Here's what I did:

Initial MB: 1024
Max MB: 2048

It seems like the GAME got about x2 faster than before.
However, when I see my task manager its 100%! doesn't go down.
Also, the system overheats pretty fast. Need help!

Set the paging to automatic and forget it, it's not the cause!

[Edit] Ugh, if you REALLY have to set it to something to feel good, set min and max to 4096. Once it's done rearranging the page file it'll never be reallocated again. But that won't make any noticable difference and certainly won;t slow down any games.[/edit]

As in OP #9,You guys aren't giving me an specific answer. Yes we are it's just not the answer you want to hear. The old day of three time you actual on board ram is gone and done with in Windows 7. I never found it to be any good in XP-PRO. Because you found something on the internet, well we all been there. We are happy you came to this web site to ask your question and WELCOME. Most of us have answered in basically the same way, let Windows 7 handle you ram and page filing. It's your computer so there for make yourself happy. Question asked and answered as far as I'm concerned.
