Extremely high ram usage after using the laptop for some time.

As above. Under task manager, the ram usage will hit up to 90+% , causing the computer to slow dramatically.

Is there any way to track down what program is causing the issue ?

I encountered the windows popup saying that "Memory is low, please close xxx program" .

So far, the xxx program refers to either NetBeans or Firefox.

But I have been using both of these programs without issues for a long time..

Thanks for any guidance :)

Is that a browser or a game that is running after you exit it? Some games may not end their process immediately after you exit. Try to end that task using the task manager. If its an internet browser, are there any add-ons that has a high RAM usage? or if its crashing the browser itself is using a large amount of RAM or their is a memory leak. If so please update it because I had a similar problem before with firefox but when I updated it, the high RAM usage is gone. I don't know anything about NetBeans but its weird that you have 8 GB of RAM and it uses 90% of your RAM? What's your idle RAM usage? Usually for 64-bit W7 its around 2 GB but when you use a browser it uses around 6 GB of RAM?

Yup I feel that it could be a possibility that some process is still running.. But I can't identify which.

My idle ram usage is around 21-29% .

I will post it when the occasion occurs again :) .

Its looks like that... 24 threads used by it alone.. I would suggest you use MSE ...its light on the system and works well with windows firewall to give a good protection..

Microsoft Security Essentials fails anti-virus certification test, Redmond challenges results | The Verge <<< This article states that MSE failed some AV certification test lol. Debatable no doubt, but it is somewhat a concern.

Well no AV can give 100 % protection... If you need 100% protection..... Then my personal advice... Don't use any !!! Its about being educated about what you do on your system...

MSE was suggested here because we have seen avg, Norton, avira etc causing BSOD to most of the ppl who come here for help... The choice is yours ... You may use what you are comfortable with.

Of course the owner operator of the computer makes the choice. You know that AVG is causing a problem. What's next? I would suggest using another anti virus program of your choice of course. I chose MSE like millions of other people all over the world have done. I have also chose to use other security programs in conjunction with MSE. MSE comes from Microsoft for Microsoft operating system and has worked well for me. If one monitors enough anti virus reviews it will become obvious that their is no perfect anti virus. If such a program was out there in the world some where we would all be using it. If you decide to remove AVG I recommend going to their site and use their tool to remove it.
