Hi all,

I have an issue with my machine. Sometimes on reboot after a certain amount of time i.e an hour or two hours say, ram usage goes from the usual I expect of 23-24% ram load to 95+% ram load. Checking running processes. Nothing comes back out of the ordinary.

The 23-24% ram load is usual idle with my normal applications I always have running.

A reboot later, it may be okay and then sit around the 23-24% ram usage (idle) for weeks at a time.

Another reboot for whatever reason, it's fine for an hour or so.. then suddenly it spikes and remains at over 95% usage with absolutely no indication of the cause.

Reboot it... It may be okay, or it may not and may take two or three reboots before the ram usage is okay.

Theres no clear indication of what causes the ram usage to suddenly shoot through the roof. When I reboot it, catching it lucky I suppose. It will then behave itself correctly and the machine can be left running 24/7 for weeks without issue. Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong? It has x4 ddr2 800mhz sticks installed X3 sticks are 2gb and X1 stick is a 1gb.

Go into Task Manager again and make sure the column "Working Set (Memory)" is shown. If not (highly likely) then go above to "View | Select Columns..." and check that option off.

Now organize your highest memory used to lowest by clicking on the "Working Set (Memory)" column up to two times until you see numbers highest to lowest.

I had tried that on numerous occasions however nothing appeared out of the ordinary.

Doing a clean boot reduced the ram load.

I've seen found the issue to some extent being related to the svchost windows update service running so I've since disabled this in msconfig? This and a couple of other things. I noticed in the listing it shows "automatic delayed startup" the issue of the ram load increasing I believe to be related to something that is automatic startup in nature but is delayed as when rebooting the machine, it's fine for a short time the suddenly there's a spike and stays high until the machine is rebooted again. Sometimes rebooting again the issue of high ram use never happens.. I'm hoping hat having disabled a few things like windows update in services and such now disabled will be the solution.

Thanks

You don't use MSCONFIG to permanently disable anything. There are other methods that do what MSCONFIG does. MSCONFIG is for diagnostic purposes only.

Just disabling the service in the OS is all that is needed.
