Solved Failed Drive replaced-new one fails

You must constantly keep tapping (quickly) on the needed key for entering the bios or boot menu. F2, F8 or Delete are examples. I have no idea what keys (compaq) uses but it should show on screen when you boot.

Just holding the key down or hitting it once will not get the job done.
