Hello friends
After a failed installation of a renesas usb3 driver for my xps dell laptop,
the function of restoring to an earlier time stuck.
Even if i try it in safe mode or command prompt.
I want to repair w7 and i have a) an image in an external drive (made with w7 system utility), b) a disk W7 and another w7sp1 which are made from iso files i got from "digital life" site.
My questions are : 1) is it possible? and which from the three is better to use? 2) if is possible am i going to loose the recovery partition? or it has nothing to do with that. 3)my os is in greek language (in true is mixed...),
the disks all are in english. Should i choose the image in the external hdd just for this reason? or it doesn't matter(because the operation system is in english anyway...)
4) the programs will stay after repairing?

Thank you for any advice.

Have you booted into the Win7 DVD for your version to run Startup Repair?

If it fails to start Win7 then try running System restore manually from the Repair Options list presented.

If that fails then I'd run System Image Recovery which only takes about 20 minutes so you'll know quickly if it's working fine and sufficient. If it doesn't start try Startup Repair on it too.

If you haven't got your files backed up you can Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console.

Thanks greg-rocker for quick reply.
I don't speak well english, I'll try to give my best...
You haven't answer to my questions...out the first one..
(i just wake up -we have 10 hours! different in time-, maybe I am still sleeping...)

So...
- Have you booted into the Windows 7 DVD for your version to run Startup Repair?
I don't have any problems to boot, my problem is just a) the "mess" in the restoring
function (it stuck). b) I'm loosing the usb3 ports (sometimes), that's why i tried to install the driver..but let us keep the thread in my 4 questions.

- If it fails to start Windows 7 then try running System restore manually from the Repair Options list presented
Just in this moment I'm trying restoring to an earlier time from WinRe.....and the answer....is...NO!....it stuck..for ever...
Like I wrote in the first post I've tried also restoring from command prompt WinRe (rstrui.exe).
(so i have to "force" to shutdown...)

-If that fails then I'd run System Image Recovery which only takes about 20 minutes so you'll know quickly if it's working fine and sufficient. If it doesn't start try Startup Repair on it too.
I would like first to know your answers to my rest 3 questions but anyway I'll try it...and write you back....Only..I don't understand what do you mean by "If it doesn't start try Startup Repair on it too"....
I mean, will the system image give me the possibility for startup repair? (never before I did this procedure and i don't understand well....)

If you think that I "got" your advices in a wrong way...please let me know..:picnic:
Hoping that I was understandable........
thank you so much for your time.

I have to add that just now Startup repair pass all the tests with no errors.
Also I would prefer (if possible), to don't roll back in the "state" of the image, instead if possible
to repair only system files.

YES, you can clean install, & you need to reinstall programs.

What happens if you do system restore? It doesn't give any error message? when doing it from WINRE it's doing exactly the same? if no error message at all... is harddisk still very busy (watch the hard disk light)?

How did installing driver fail.... any error messages? Check "device manager" ... any usb3 stuff listed there? Uninstall it.

Hi theog
thanks for reply. (I'm sorry I use to many words but often people don't understand my english)

In your first two answers you speak for the image I took with W7 system utility.
I just have what the application gave me. (system image and backup data-very early, after I bougt laptop-just1)
I haven't see a possibility to back up recovery partition, but anyway I believe it will not touch it.
My question if I'm going to loose it(recov.part), was in the case I was going to do a repair with the disks I made from 'digital life- iso'.

We speak for a Dell xps laptop
I made the OEM recovery disks.

I would prefere if possible(for time saving) to just repair system files, and this is my question....
..what is the best to use. If I use the image (w7 system utility), or the OEM disks
which both I took in a very early time, I would have to reinstall
everything again.
And the last question is, if you advice me to do a repair with the W7 disks (from iso),
Will I get a problem from different languages (os in greek, W7 disks in english)
I'm really sorry I make you tired with my bad english.
I really appreciate for your patience and time you gave me.

You have win7 greek installed now (and want to keep it). Don't install or repair install with win7 english! You need a win7 greek install dvd to do it.

So you don't have a recent backup? Only one when you bought computer, so actually the same as "restore to factory defaults".

Install or repair install doesn't touch the RECOVERY partition. It does touch (rewrite) the MBR (master boot code). Even startup repair (you most likely already did) does rewrite the MBR. Acer uses a customized MBR to restore to factory settings as far as I know.

WINRE from F8 so repair computer, still shows special ACER option to recover to factory settings? Can you still trigger the restore to factory settings on boot by a special key? Look in your documentation how to do it. Don't start the actual restore process yet!! Just want to know if it's still working.

Hello Kaktussoft
Thank you a lot for your interest..
The story is :
I download and install Renesas usb3 driver from Dell site hoping to solve the problem of loosing often the ports.
In the first window (from installer), unfortunatelly I don't remeber exactly, but was written something like "prepering catalogs OB...", it stuck. I wait a long time but nothing. Just stuck.
So I tried to close it from task manager..and was no possible.
After I shoutdown laptop.
When I started it, I tried to restore in an earlier time, just for to clear the failed installation. Restoring stuck also in the first window, was saying "please wait prepere for restoring your system settings". I wait a long time, nothing comes.
After I had to force laptop to shoutdown.
After I tried restoring from WinRe, again stuck. Again I forced it to shoutdown.
Then I start to write in forums......
The strange is that somehow is like if the installation half failed and half was successfully
because in some files from the driver I see an old date, but in others the date of installation.
Thank you.

So yes the situation is like you have understand...it was my mistake I had not make it clear...so to use oem disks or w7image is like reinstalling w7...

Of course I would prefer to have W7 Ultimate...but is illegal...so I'll stay with my version.
I don't care anymore to have greek but I care to have the recovery partition (is a very easy way to roll back)......but the recovery partition have nothing to do with languages?
So can I use the W7 disks(from iso) for repair and change language?
Thanks for patience and informations

Don't use the win7 english ISO's!

Restore an image=put the partitions you backupped in a state as they were at time of backup.

RECOVERY partition=Use it to recover the laptop to the state it was when you bought it. So it makes the laptop greek.

Clean install=install windows in a empty partition.
================

Best thing to do is: Borrow a win7 x64 Greek Home Premium DVD from neighbors and do http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

try that first

May vss errors...hmmm
Is it a western digital disk or seagate? Please do this in elevated command prompt
Code:
chkdsk/f C:
So check the disk for errors and repair them.
For seagate disk use SEATOOLS, for western digital disk use Data Lifeguard Diagnostic .
VSS errors ... that's why system restore doesn't work! Maybe disk is not healthy anymore. Prove it's healthy with the tools I described above

Turn it off, press OK. turn it on again afterwards. Give it enough space at least 8GB.
Now try to create a manual restore point
......i have do this already...nothing change
I mean again it stuck in the new point manualy made, after the above process
...and now of course all the restoring points-times are deleted...

There is no reason to have Ultimate instead of Home Premium. They are the exact same OS with a few extra expensive features in Ultimate that almost no one needs.

If this is the original Dell factory Preinstall then I would Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to get rid of the bloatware and useless duplicate utilties which throttle and corrupt Win7. You sound like a tech enthusiast and no tech enthusiast would run the boatware preinstall.

During the booted reinstall you can delete all partitions except OEM Diagnostics, which I would run from boot first to make sure it works and test your hardware before the reinstall: Dell Diagnostics Utility - How to Run the. If it won't run then delete it's partition too during the reinstall.

You can copy out your files using step 9 in the tutorial.
