Hello!

I have a slight issue. Since this April every time patch Tuesday comes around, and I download the monthly security update.
(May being the kb4103718) The initial installation goes smoothly even after reboot. However when I shut down my computer for the night, and turn it back on the next day, I am met with an issue.

My computer looks odd and get a notification that says "failed to connect to windows service"
Is there other people that get this? Also is there an update I may need to fix that issue?

Or will I have to keep avoiding these updates every month from now on? Any help would be appreciated!

Hi FairyLunar,

Give this a try:

View attachment reset winsock.zip

If your computer still looks odd, try System Restore, to date just prior to update!

How to run System Restore.
Start :orb:, in searchbox type: system restore
click on it
follow prompts.

Thank you! System restore seems to have fixed the issue. (It's also what I had to do in April too.)

However it seems even though this makes the issue go away, it only seems to be a temp fix. Cause each new update for Patch Tuesday causes this problem to happen.

Your system specs don't indicate if your Win HP is x32 or x64, which is it?

Did you try resetting Winsock?

If you did and it didn't work.

Then after you restore your sytem to working version, change widows setting to download and let me choose, then Install windows updates one at a time until you find the offending update.

Uninstall it, and when it's offered again right-click and choose hide, providing it's not a security update, if it is, post the kb# and I'll check to see if M$ has info on bogus update/patch.

WindowsUpdate.log would help, located at:
C:\Windows

Sorry! I have 64 version!

Also I just did the restore option then hid the update. Also this update is " kb4103718" And I do have it already set to "Download and let me choose." However! What does winsock do by the way exactly? :O

Question again, did you try running the reset winsock batch file?

Winsock is a programming interface and the supporting program that handles input/output requests for Internet applications in a Windows operating system. It's called Winsock because it's an adaptation for Windows of the Berkeley UNIX sockets interface. Sockets is a particular convention for connecting with and exchanging data between two program processes within the same computer or across a network.

netsh winsock reset is useful command that you can use in Microsoft Windows to reset winsock catalog back to default setting or clean state. You can try this if you are having following Internet access or networking problems but still failing to resolve the problem after trying all other suggestions.

FYI: If you right-click on the reset winsock bat and choose edit you can view the code I wrote. Simplistic code actually.
