Solved Failure Configuring Windows Updates Message While PC is Restarting

Okay, I will leave this thread open. I always worry about being a bother or doing things wrong according to a website's policies, so thank you for the assurance about leaving this thread open for now. Sorry if email notifications for activity in this thread got annoying. I hope you didn't get one every time I used the button to edit my posts.

No need to worry, you haven't done anything wrong. And it's no bother, we're all here to help each other. :)
Personally, I don't have notifications switched on for any threads or forums, I just come on and check when I have the free time to do it.

As soon as the April rollup is published, try and install it and then post back here if you're still having issues. If it installs successfully then you can mark the thread as solved. But let us know either way so we know whether it's resolved the issue or not.

Hello,

I've got exactly the same problem as Efdy described with my Windows 7 laptop for KB4088875, KB4088878 and KB4088881.

I can also update other Windows Updates but just not the above 3. It seems to go as far as 13% and then shut down and after restart, it'd go only up to 13% again before declaring "Failure ..." as Efdy has described.

I've tried virtually everything mentioned in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10164/fix-windows-update-errors , including "Windows Update Troubleshooter", rename SoftwareDistribution /catroot2 folder. I didn't try installing "Servicing Stack Update" (KB3177467) as my system has got this update already in 2016.

So, the strategy here is wait for the April Rollout ??

If you're going down the Rollup route, then I would advise just skipping the March rollup completely. They've been pulled from Windows update anyway. It's been a bit of a disaster for patches this month tbh.

The next rollup will be pushed out in 4 days time and will include all the March fixes anyway, so I would advise waiting for that. Like Efdy, if you're still having issues, post back in here and let everyone know, so we can look into more fixes - once MS has sorted out this months patching fiasco!

Hello. Thank you for taking a minute to check on this thread. I appreciate your consideration and your help.

This month, my Windows updates installed normally as usual on the Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit desktop computer. On the Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit PC, the same thing happened this month that happened in March. All the other updates installed, such as security update for MS Office Compatibility Pack and Malicious Software Removal Tool, which I installed first individually. But when I tried to install the April Security Quality Monthly Rollup, I got the "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes." message again.

Only thing different was it didn't get stuck on that screen for 2 or 3 hours. After restarting, it got to 13%, the "Failure configuring Windows updates" message displayed for a moment, then it said "Shutting down", restarted automatically a second time, tried again to finish installing the April security rollup, during which "Configuring Windows updates 35% Don't turn off your computer" displayed for a moment before telling me configuration of updates failed and returning to desktop.

Is this when I look for that dual boot tutorial that brought me to this website in the first place years ago and start over from a reformatted hard drive? I saw during the past month where some humans who experienced this same sort of difficulty found that the March security rollup thing updated normally after reinstalling Windows 7.

Too bad that April Rollup again didn't work for Efdy and it probably won't work for me.

Let me supply two pieces of information.

1. I saw the following messages in c:\windows\logs\cbs.log :

Googling a bit, people did seem to need to reinstall/repair Windows 7 before this problem can be fixed.

Somebody here :
https://social.technet.microsoft.co...ils-with-error-0800f0826?forum=w7itproinstall

said that he solved the problem : " .... I had to take ownership and reset permissions on about 100 different reg subkeys of HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root .... "

I almost wanted to do the other day. But the above message was ~2011 and so I hesitated a bit.

Any comments ??

Is this when I look for that dual boot tutorial that brought me to this website in the first place years ago and start over from a reformatted hard drive?

Oh, I guess I would be looking for the repair install tutorial. Should I think that would help? That computer installs every other update besides the Security Quality Monthly Rollup updates from March and April, and the same thing happened when trying to install the security only whatever instead last month after that rollup thing wouldn't install.

I tried that other stuff on some Microsoft web page that says:
Method 1: Restart Windows and install Windows updates in a clean boot state
Method 2: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
Method 3: Unplug your removable media from the computer
Method 4: Perform a system restore
Method 5: Perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) (Windows 7 and Windows Vista)

I couldn't try System Restore because this is how I found out I had that System Protection configured improperly (for the wrong drive) all this time and I didn't have restore points, which seems to be corrected since following some instructions in Seven Forums tutorials. I tried installing the April rollup update thing in clean boot state and no removable media connected. It just did the same thing, "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes."

So, I guess I will continue to do nothing for now and just stay off the Web with that Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit PC and use this Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit PC for the Web for a while. As far as I know, there wasn't anything wrong with this PC except a bunch of errors in that CheckSUR.log that Snick fixed for me. Thanks again. That was amazing and much appreciated.

Hi Efdy,

Have you really tried this reinstallation step already and it still doesn't work for you ?

The laptop that has this problem is also 64-bit.

Hi Efdy,

Seems you're still having issues. Have you tried uninstalling the January rollup? A lot of these update issues seem to have started in January for some users. You could try uninstalling that one and then see if the latest one will install.

If it still doesn't work then the Repair Install option is always a good option for fixing many problems. It's actually not as painful as you might think. It usually keeps all your personal files, settings, drivers. I've used it before and the only things I had to do after were set up my Windows sounds/theme again and download and reinstall the updates again. Everything else was kept.

It will take a couple of hours, but if it's your only option then it might be worth giving it a go. Make sure all your files are backed up before.

You can only start a Repair Install whilst you're logged in to Windows. Remember that you must pick the Upgrade option and not the Custom option or it will start a new install. Fresh install is always a last resort for me.

Brink's guide above will walk you through all the steps.

Hello. No, I was saying that I tried the rest of that stuff except for System Restore for the reason mentioned. I may try to reinstall Windows, but I don't know if I would be wasting my time because I don't know if the problem is with my system or with Microsoft's updates. It's an unfortunate coincidence in timing at the very least.

Oh, Hello, man. I was making a post while you were, I reckon. Thank you for these suggestions. I will try all of what you said. I appreciate the help and the encouragement about doing a repair install. I feel less afraid of trying that already just from reading your words.

Um, I haven't read through the repair install tutorial yet. Is there anything I need to know that it doesn't say because of having a dual boot thing going on, or should that not really have anything to do with trying to do a repair install for the Windows 7 Ultimate x64 OS?

Also, can someone who knows please look at my MGDiag report thing in post #2 of this thread and reply to say if my OS is legitimate and like maybe if it also is a kind/type/whatever of product that allows me to do a repair install? Thanks.

[Edit: Brds7t7, regarding your suggestion above, am I meant to uninstall only the January rollup update thing, but leave the one from February installed, and then only try to install the April rollup update thing, but not the one from March? I know that's what you said to do. I just want to be sure. Sorry to be tedious about it. Thanks]

I'm not 100% sure when it comes to dual booting with XP. I haven't used XP on a system for a few years now. I do still have XP in a Virtual Machine, but it very rarely gets booted up now.

I would post in the repair install thread before you go ahead with it. I can't say for sure if it'll leave your XP partition bootable.

Also, can you open up control panel -> System and check your product ID at the bottom. Look at the second set of digits, does it say OEM or does it have 3 numbers?

With regards to the update removal, I would try removing the February update, then rebooting, then try uninstalling the January one.

Edit: Don't worry about the product ID, I just noticed in your MGAdiag post that you're using a Retail version of 7. :D

No need to apologise ;)

Brink's tutorials are very thorough and cover a lot of questions/issues that may arise, and things to be aware of before you go ahead with it. Somebody might be able to help you better with regard to the dual boot issue. It might not affect the XP partition at all, but I'd rather not tell you to just go ahead with it and then cause you even more headaches.

I've always found Repair Install to be pretty good when it comes to fixing issues. It'll remove all the Windows updates which is a bit of a pain, but in your case it could fix the issues you're having.

I would try the Rollup removal first though and see if it fixes the issue. Hopefully removing those and then installing the April rollup might fix things. Plus it will contain all the security updates that will be missing.

Let us know the outcome of that first.

Just a quick headsup - the April rollup reappeared in my update list again today, so it might have been reissued.
I always hide them on patch tuesday as I use the Security-only updates. So, if it's reappeared again today it's more than likely been updated and pushed out again.

Might be worth doing another check for updates and try to reinstall once more before trying anything else.

I guess it might have been more apparent weeks ago that a repair install was necessary if not for the common problems relating to the March Security Monthly Quality Rollup even for some who didn't experience whatever it was having to do with NIC something or other. I apologize to anyone who may feel their time was misspent exploring alternatives to repair install since this thread was started. Thank you all for helping me.

I ran chkdsk, I think it's called, on the computer where the repair install will be done and did full scans of both desktop computers using Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for April and Malwarebytes with everything checked including scan for rootkits whatever those are. There was nothing found by either type of scan, so I kind of doubt anything like that contributed to the problem.

At least that computer seems to function mechanically and electronically. Hopefully that will continue to be the case, and repair install will be enough to get things back in order otherwise.

I will close this thread now and move these concerns to the area of Seven Forums dealing with repair installs. I suggest to anyone else who posted to this thread after experiencing the same difficulty when trying to install the March Security Monthly Quality Rollup that you start a thread in which you may receive assistance dealing specifically with your affected computer system if you haven't already done so and wish to seek further assistance from Seven Forums members.

Thank you all again for your kindness and consideration in helping me deal with my computer malfunctions. I really appreciate it.

Efdy, I hope you can write back / report whether doing a repair install can allow you to install those Rollup updates successfully. I failed the April Rollup (after failing the March ones).
