I have looked at the endless specs on the Intel Site however, I am too stupid to comprehend what they say.

Please help me identify which one will work the first time.

You have a computer which currently has an Intel Core i5-3470S 2.90 GHz quad core processor?
You want to upgrade that computer to the fastest Intel Core i7 processor it supports?

Before we can help you, we need to know one or the other about that computer:
Its brand name and model name and exact model number
The brand name and exact model number of its motherboard

The first thing you need to know is the type of socket you currently have. In your case, your current i5 is an LGA1155 (1,115 pins on the CPU in a Land Grid Array).

Now that we have that bit of Info. we can deduce down what the fastest LGA1155 was for that time. In this case it's Ivy Bridge. And the "fastest"[SUP]1[/SUP] Ivy Bridge CPU of the time going by Passmark was either the 3770K or 3770. If you overclock you'll need the K version. K version Intel CPUs mean it's unlocked and overcloackable. However, overclocking is hit and miss, taxes your system more and depending on what your computer's use is, may be negligible. It's mostly a bragging right in my opinion. Which means you could get by with a 3770 and save about ~$30 or so bucks. Probably no factor with used prices.

Intel Core i73770K Processor 8M Cache up to 3.90 GHz Product Specifications

However, your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI may need updating to support it. You'll have to refer to your motherboard or computer manufacturer.

Comparing my current 6600K Skylake CPU to the older 3770 Ivy Bridge CPUs, they're pretty damn comparable which is crazy because the Ivy Bridge is about three years older than my current CPU. The only major difference with my CPU and the 3770 is it has a bit more single thread computing capability. Which is what I really care about right now because the games FS2004 and FSX are single threaded, CPU orientated games. They're not multi threaded! [SUP]1[/SUP] The fastest CPU depends on your primary use. What do you do with your computer? Game, Photoshop, video editing, etc.

The System(s) I need help with upgrading are Hp 8300 Elite USFF Desktops.
They both are used to run POS Software, one is the Server the other is a Client.
They both must run Windows-10 and not be upgraded to Windows-11.
I also run Picasa to organize and store Family Photos and Microsoft Office.
I am upgrading the Storage from 7200 RPM HDD's to SSD's.
Memory is at it's max, 16GB's.
To insure the fastest performance, I decided to upgrade the Processors at the same time..
I am not into overclocking so I believe the 3770 version will be just fine.
I will try and determine the BIOS Level and if it needs updating.
Thank you for advising me!

It's x64 Win10? Does My Intel(R) Processor Support Microsoft Windows(R) 10?

Is POS slow or something? If so, perhaps it's network...

The SSDs will be a HUGE benefit. Just get in the habit of cloning the server and client. Make sure TRIM is on, sectors are aligned, etc.

Old Info. but may want to read: How to Speed Up Your Solid-State Drive by Re-Aligning Its Partitions

Sidenote: If it were me, I'd have a backup POS client and server. Not sure what Biz you're running...

My son is the owner of the business which is a small retail liquor store.
I believe the POS is OK.
If I run / use Picasa to do just about anything, there appears to be a lag / slowness.
I like and use Picasa Facial Recognition feature a lot.
Lots of grandchildren and grandpa thinks they all look alike.
Having my daughters help me sort out ones I have miss identified helps but there are many to be checked.
I will get external drives to clone to.
Thanks again for the additional info and suggestions.

I honestly don't think the CPU upgrade from an i5 to i7, in this case, would produce any noticeable difference, and given that this is such an old manufactured slim PC could be a pain in the ass to do.

A new SSD and more ram would be more effective IMO.

I was just going to say the same thing. And it could also be a software issue along with other stuff he may have running in the background and what not.

He indicated the RAM is already maxed out, and at 16GB which should be plenty.

You'll notice in that HP thread that I linked to there was talk of using a 3770s instead due to heat, but the TDP (Thermal Design Power) between the 3770 and 3770s is 12 watts. Not much if you ask me. Note, HP did stick in a 3470s as you indicated.

In conclusion, try the SSD first and see what happens.

Addendum:

When you use an SSD, you'll want to make sure AHCI is turned on, but if that wasn't on from the get go when you installed Windows then it has to be done after the fact through a registry change. Then after the registry change you reboot, enter BIOS straight away and flip to AHCI. Save and exit and all should be good. This post will explain what happens if you turn on AHCI without first changing a registry setting and the consequences. No, you don't replace the motherboard. Unless that person had something else going on there.

How to enable AHCI in Windows 7 RC after installation

Now, you did mention Windows 10. Enable AHCI in Windows 8 and Windows 10 after Installation | Tutorials

Reading through this thread is just classic entertainment.

I also learned by accident, that by upgrading the CPU, I net a better Graphics capability.
I'm going to give it a try as I use Picasa a lot.

I'm going to give it a try as I use Picasa a lot.

If you do that, you likely will going from Intel HD Graphics 2500 integrated graphics to Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated graphics, which will result in very little improvement in graphic quality.

I tend to agree with what was said in post #7, which would be a better option.
