Fax Server 2008 with Win 7 and XP

I have a Server 2008 with Fax service installed and working. I cannot get either my Win 7 workstations nor my XP workstations to connect to the fax server. Both can connect to \\server\fax as a printer, but neither can actually function.

The Win 7 Fax & Scan says "You do not have security permissions to complete this operation" when I try to add the \\server as an account. XP says something similar.

Has anyone resolved this issue reliably?

Have you added them to the Fax Users Group?

Yes, they are added. Auto-create is also enabled. And, for the moment, all user groups have permission to manage faxes. Makes no difference.

Does it matter that I am working in Workgroup mode? i.e., no Active Directory, no Domain. No Exchange erver.

Ahh ok. Is there a reason to why you havent setup the Server as a DC?

How many PC's are connected? Is it for a company or do you have it in a virtual environment for yourself?

Dr's office. Client does not want the features of a Domain. Does not want or need individual logons or passwords. Nor individual email. Would not consider paying for a server until GE required it to support their centralized imaging software, ViewPoint (office has four or five ulatrasound machines).

Alright fair enough, I think they are missing out on a major feature though, its almost stupid not having it as it makes everything easier to manage. Plus because its a Dr's office you would have thought they would want the additional security.

I've not actually used Server 2008 without it being a Domain Controller. I am presuming that you can use the Fax from the Server ok?

Yes, faxing in and out from the server works just fine. I really wanted to set up a DC, even if most employees use the same username, and I kill the password requirement. But the owner is rather stubborn.

Well from what you have said, it seams like a permissions problem. Maybe you can use this situation to your advantage and say that configuring Active Directory may fix the problem?

This may or may not be helpful:
Install the Fax Server Role

Have you granting permission for the Everyone or anonymous group to the Fax group? This way permissions shouldnt be a problem (Not best practice I know but it should resolve the problem).

Yep, every group has fax privileges. I wish I could get a definitive answer. This entire fax service seems to be an orphan product at Microsoft.

If you create an account with the same Username and Password as the server admin, but on a local PC. Does that work?
