My Dell PC came with Win 7 Ultimate and I installed a second WD 500GB HD on which I would like to install Win XP for legacy software. I have XP mode on a virtual PC setup but would like to have the option of a backup Win XP in a dual boot environment.

When I first tried the Win XP setup, I received an error message "setup could not be completed and has been cancelled to avoid damaging the computer"

My Win XP disks apparently do not include the functionality of SATA drivers, which are on the PC. I looked at the SevenForums tutorial and found references to this issue.

Where do I find the appropriate SATA drivers to download?
Can I download to a CD or external HD rather than a floppy?

Many thanx for any assistance!

Unplug all other HD's except the target XP HD, use an X w/SP3 installer for your licensed version.

If it fails again, you'll need to insert your SATA drivers:
SATA Drivers - Load in Windows XP Setup on Dual Boot
SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD

Check for the XP SATA drivers on the Dell Support downloads webpage for your Service Tag or Model number. If none, google the PC or mobo model name and number for XP drivers. If you post back here this info we can help you locate them.

I don't have a floppy disk drive on this machine. Also, where do I find the SATA drivers for Win XP?

I just told you where to find the drivers. Why would you ignore steps I took the time to type out for you, as though they aren't even there? Do you expect me to type them out again because you didn't read them?

Sorry - didn't mean to offend. Thanks for the help.

To clarify earlier response, I have successfully downloaded nLite and completed all steps in the process to Step 10, which states to "copy SATA driver to image folder". So, once again, where is the specified SATA driver?

For the third time:

Check for the XP SATA drivers on the Dell Support downloads webpage for your Service Tag or Model number. If none, google the PC or mobo model name and number for XP drivers. If you post back here this info we can help you locate them.

What is make/model of your Dell?

It's an XPS 8300. Don't know the mobo info offhand. I did google "XPS 8300 XP drivers", but didn't see anything that I recognized as a potential. Appreciate any help.

Did you input your Dell Tag number from the sticker on bottom of laptop to find your SATA drivers? If not broken out separately as a download then they are likely in the Chipset. Pay attention to where it extracts and then browse to that from NLite when you are slipstreaming the XP ISO to pick up the SATA and AHCI drivers.

If you need help doing this then please ask back and give the step you are at in SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD .

I'll try that. Many thanks.
