Few questions regarding RAM

I have 2GB DDR3 RAM on my laptop at the moment, I was thinking about getting 1 or 2 GB RAM added to my laptop. I'm planning to add more, as CPU is constantly hitting nearly 1.5gb ram with very few applications opened.

I have some basic questions, (they may be silly in nature too), I would appreciate if my doubts could be cleared.

1. I haven't upgraded my RAM before on laptop, in case if I get a new laptop in future, can I use this added RAM on my new laptop (if I plan to use it, or is it recommended to add a new RAM only on the system ?)

2. Is there a difference between PC and Laptop "RAM" or can they be used commonly among both ?

3. Is CPU speed an factor in adding more RAM ? Will there be any sort of conflicts because of it ?

1.It can be used if the same type, DDR2, or DDR3, from your not filled out specs I think you have DDR2 now.

2. Yes, desktop RAM is a module twice as big. Laptop RAM is SODIMMs, Small factor Dual inline memory module. Desktops use DIMMs.

3. The CPU doesn't limit RAM, however the manufacturer will have placed a limit on it. Check your manual for upgrade options. It is best to buy a RAM kit, they will be matched SODIMMs and work better, mix and match RAM is not recommended.

To better help us to help you would you please add your systems specs? Here's the correct way to do it. :SystemInfo See Your System Specs Under System Manufacturer/Model Number add whether it is a desktop or laptop and whether self built. Very important

Not likely that the ram in your current laptop will be the same speed as your future laptop . \

Pc and laptop ram , usually the laptop ram is shorter .

You will need to get the specs from your current laptop so you can get the same speed of memory . Take a look at your current ram , then # on the ram for example . 4200u / 8 = 525 mHz ram .

Almost sounds like your running Vista. Going by your sys specs x32 4 gigs would be ok - sys would only use/report 3.4-3.5 though. If your currently using ddr2 then no it's not going to work in a newer laptop withy ddr3. The other thing about adding ram to the current laptop - it may have only two sodim slots, if your 2 gigs now by adding ram you may need to replace them all if each has a 1 gig stick. Check your laptop specs before you decide what to do. It's also a Dell, ok well when I replaced - added ram to my old dell I had to remove the keyboard to get to the second slots - good times.
As Britton said it is best that all ram sodimms match. And so if you upgrade and can't find the oem you'll need to replace them all anyway.

Thanks for your detailed info mate, really appreciate it. I had done scanning via Crucial scan once again to find which DDR version I was using & the DDR3 which I mentioned in my first post is correct

I have updated my specs using the tutorial manually.

Thanks mate, really appreciate it. I didn't get the calculation part. How to view the number on the RAM ? from system specs I was only able to gather serial no, manufacturer, form factor.
Memory Type was given as Unknown.

Thanks for the info mate

I'm running w7, don't recall using Vista more than a couple of that times in a cybercafe. My PC, old lappy had XP, my current laptop has W7.
