reboot system locks up at loading screen

reboot system locks up after 5 minutes

as its a complete lock up i assume ram , reseat ram check bios settings reboot ........... system locks up

ram is running UNLINKED set manaully to 1066 5/5/5/15 2T

i set the ram to 800mhz same timings and all is well

so after running my ram at 1066 for god knows how long its now decided it wont anymore and im at a complete loss , nothing has changed , i know my bios settings inside out so im 100% certain all is as it has always been in there

If anyone can tell me what the hell has gone wrong i will clean your car and cut your grass for the next six months :D

Hi Darren,

Have you tried resetting your BIOS to its defaults and then re-inputting any custom modifications? What does CPUz say about your memory timings as determined by the SPD chip?

Hi Darren,

Have you tried resetting your BIOS to its defaults and then re-inputting any custom modifications? What does CPUz say about your memory timings as determined by the SPD chip?

cpuz reports the timings correctly (ocz platinum edition sli ready) as 5/5/5/15 , however if i set the bios timing select to auto it detects 5/7/7/24 which is incorrect , i have tried these timings though but same effect , as with other even slacker timings still no 1066 , i can run at 4/4/4/10 at 800mhz though :D which i am considering as an alternative

voltage set at 2.2v which is the upper limit

oh and yes tried a bios reset still no dice even with everything at stock

Silly question, did you replace the thermal compound?:(

yes it is a silly question ;) no seriously thoiugh mate i cleaned the cpu and hs with an alcahol based cleaner and reapplied AS5 , my temps are already a good 3-4 degrees down

How old is PSU? very new? can you test to make sure the voltages are good? it might failing and running out of steam. < electric steam

voltages are rock solid , even the vdroop on the cpu is minimal

thanks for the help.....keep it coming :D

Can you post some CPU-Z screenies so we know what all we are looking at?

Also you probably know. all sticks will run at the speed of the lowest stick. Try maybe testing one at a time to see if each can be changed individually.

Edit: Also, if the sticks are sets, then they might be set to run in specific channels. did you place them back in exactly the same channels you took them out of?

there are 4 sticks 1gb each all sticks same size same speed same manufacturing code , 2x 1gb sticks matched pair , 2 sets of these , 4 sticks in all running dual channel , it doesnt matter which slots as they are all the same , but i have put each matched pair into corresponding channels just incase

If I'm reading this right, the only thing you actually did was reapply thermal compound; and to do that, you removed the RAM, the gpu and the motherboard from the case, right?

I would check to see if your board's wiring is properly attached; I would blow out (gently, with air) my dimm slots as particles may have gotten in them; and I would make sure my board was securely fastened to the case.

yep thats all i did , its a new case recently built a all cables managed and routed around the back of the case and all securely fixed ive had issues with pcs ive repaired in th past having bad or no connections to points on the ram sticks , in that case they fail completely , this ram works fine at 950mhz at 800mhz i can run the timings at 4/4/4/10 so i dont think there is anything wrong with any of my connections/hardware.

Its getting to be an obsession now :p at 800mhz and 4/4/4/10 read writes and latency are on par with 5/5/5/15 1066mhz , it will run fine at the slower mhz/tighter timings..................but thats not the point anymore , i need to find out what the hells gone on for my own sanity ;)

If the BIOS timing is set to AUTO, what does CPU-Z give you, I think we need some screen shots, you could be making this all up. :p

You upgrade the BIOS of that XFX 780i to the latest?

My old PC, my wife's current () has to have manual settings or the dummy mobo under clocks it, I feel your pain.

im an overclocker i never set anything to auto , the bios sets timings incorrectly anyway (read my other posts ;) ) either way no matter how slack i set the timings 950mhz is thast fastest i can go now , yes it is the latest bios however it worked fine before so i wouldnt think a bios flash would solve the issue anyhoo , the only way i can set the memory to 1066 now is to remove 2 sticks of ram and set the cpu back to default and there aint now way im loosing 2gb of ram and a 1gb cpu overclock for 100mhz extra on my memory ;)

another option would be to go for 2 x 2gb sticks and use the sli ready NVidia chipset bios config to automatically set evrytrhing up for me with regards to my ram (it doesnt work with more than 2 sticks) but im not sure if that will work and it will be a huge waste of cash ;) especially as im trying to persuade the wife to let me get an i7 / DDR3 / Mobo :D

its just very very annoying because i ALWAYS manage to figure these things out in the end but this has me stumped

i wish i was making it up :p

@Archie1223: I know that nothing is at auto, but what is your RAM voltage set to?

EDIT: Never mind, I just saw it.

Four sticks of RAM will stress a memory controller more than two will. I'm not too up on Intel systems, but on an AMD system, you sometimes need to give the Northbridge a little voltage bump when running four sticks. Maybe give that a try?

NB at its safe maximum mate 1.4v , the NB chip on this mobo gets too hot as it is , i dont want to push my luck.

its worked fine for 6 months , never missed a beat , but now for some reason its decided to go south , everything else is A ok just the ram wont run at its default and i cant stand not knowing why ha ha ;)

Yeah, I wasn't sure how hard you were pushing it. It's never really a good idea to go above max for the NB unless you seriously cool it. lol

Sounds like a really weird problem. The only thing I can think of is that if the RAM sticks are matched pairs, they might not have been put back into the "matched" slots, and are now running at 800 to prevent timing issues.

Seems unlikely, but there is a lot of alchemy in memory controllers that the big boys don't release without a 400 page non disclosure agreement. ;)

Unfortunately, it's all I've got for a theory right now. Sorry.
