Hi,

Im not sure if this is in the right subject as it's a weird one, so sorry if it is.

Basically, i have specific folders/files in the My Pictures and Document folders that i add to almost everyday.
I want to make sure i have a backup of them and the last time i tried it, by creating a Winrar folder and burning them onto a disc took quite a while.

I'm wondering if there is a way to backup the folders on to a disc (or seperate discs as it they are large files) easily and to overwrite the previously written data.
E.g. Insert disc 1 and let the computer burn part of the files then insert disc 2 etc. (Almost like backing up your computer normally)

Also if i could password protect the discs aswell. (Winrar has a password thing i used but i don't want to go down that long route everytime).

Thanks for taking your time to view this thread and hopefully someone can help. :p

What burning program do you use? Some can create multisession discs, which enables you to add to them later. As for the password thing, I think winrar might be the way to do that. I don't know of another solution for that, but I'm sure there's another way.

I simply drag and drop the winrar file on to it.

If you use the right cd, you can create multisession discs. (I think CD-R s will do that) I know Nero will do multisession discs, but I think you can do it with windows' built in burning function. (my dad did it in xp)

Hmmm. I don't have nero on my laptop.

Was just hoping for a simple, pick file and burn to over-write and add a password protect.

You would be much better off (and a whole lot faster) by using a 2nd hard drive or an external hard drive and setting up an automated backup. You lose the stability and safety of an optical disc but the gain in performance and automation is worth it, to me at least.

I do a nightly backup of my C: D: E: and F: drives to a 2nd internal HD. I also do a nightly backup to a web based backup site (Acronis) of my data only. Every month or so or when I do something I consider major, I do a full backup to an external HD.

I'm a tad paranoid about backing up so I also run a little program called Mirror Folder that copies specific volatile folders to a separate location on my 2nd internal HD. This happens every two hours except for one which happens immediately, sort of a software raid setup.

Windows 7 has the ability to create "Live" disk, it works like a file system, slowly add and delete files on Discs.
No third-party software required. Take advantage of Vista's Live File System optical disc format | Microsoft Windows | TechRepublic.com

Or: Burn a CD or DVD in Windows Explorer
  1. Insert a writable disc, such as a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, or DVD+RW disc, into your computer's CD, DVD, or Blu‑ray Disc burner.
  2. In the AutoPlay dialog box that appears, click Burn files to disc using Windows Explorer.
If the AutoPlay dialog box doesn't appear, click the Start button
    4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33.jpg
, click Computer, and then double-click your disc burner.
  3. In the Burn a Disc dialog box, type a name for this disc in the Disc title box, click Like a USB flash drive, and then click Next.
This is the option for burning a disc that uses the Live File System disc format. It might take several minutes for the disc to be formatted. When the formatting is complete, an empty disc folder opens.
  4. Open the folder that contains the files you want to burn, and then drag the files into the empty disc folder.
To select more than one item, press and hold the Ctrl key, and then click the files you want to burn.
As you drag files into the disc folder, they are copied automatically to the disc.

You can copy files (or entire folders) to the disc folder by dragging them to the disc icon or to an open disc folder
  5. After copying the files and folders, you might need to close the disc session. For more information, see Close or finalize a CD or DVD.

Backup media can always be destroyed. You will far fewer problems doing that which the majority of us do and use an external disk for your backups.

Is there anyway to password protect the folders without having to use winrar or anyother program like that ?

Thanks again.
