After you delete the file, right click the desktop and select refresh and it should clear. I noticed the same thing in normal folders also. Just a quirk in Windows 7 not refreshing your view.

This trick comes with a warning. It involves registry so make a system restore point, first. Registry changes can cause problems.

This should work
Click on Start at the lower left
Type the word regedit in the search box and hit enter
Right click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and click Find
Type dontrefresh in the search box and then hit enter
You will see DontRefresh, right click it to change the settings, set it to 0
Boot your computer. It should be set properly.
Be sure to make a system restore point first, to restore registry if necessary.

I have suggested this to other posters and got the response that they cannot get through the process, not true, works for me.

Try in an elevated command prompt if necessary
Elevated Command Prompt

That registry entry, to me, seems to represent functionality within Internet Explorer. Historically speaking, Microsoft have always in the past linked IE into the Windows explorer shell. Therefore it may work, however there's an easier and safer solution.

Go to Tools/Folder Options/General Tab, and at the bottom, in the 'Navigation Pane', make sure 'Show all folders' and 'Automatically expand to current folder' are checked.

That worked a treat for me :)
