Files Associations crash explorer ?????

Hi.

With my Windows Seven, when going to Control Panel / Programs / Associate un file type or a protocol to a program (translated from French, not sure it is exactly this...), it crashs explorer before the list displays....????

Any advice on how to correct this problem ?

You need to look in eventviewer to determine the cause of the crash. Click on Start button, then type (in search box or Run box) "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes). Look in critical errors for explorer.exe crash at the date and time it occurred. Copy and paste what you see.

Euuuh...Not sure to understand how to use event viewer.....Where must I search for explorer.exe crash ?
If I search in Windows Logs / Application, I found only this :

With the explanation : (translated from french) : Environement stopped in an unnatented manner, and explorer.exe restarted.

Unfortunately, Winlogon is a very generic error that can be caused by any number of things. So its hard to pinpoint from the event log, the reason for the crash.

Try rebooting your computer in safe mode. Then check if the problem still exists. If it doesnt then its probably a 3rd party app or driver rhats responsible.

Try a couple of things one by one.

1) Download and scan with malwarebytes antimalware (its freeware).

2) If you have system restore turned on, then try restoring to a point before this problem occurred.

2) If 1) and 2) above do not help, then it looks like the OS is mucked up. So back up your data and do a repair install. Go through this tutorial.

I have exactly the same problem, except I’m running the “Default Programs” tool (%windir%\system32\control.exe). Here is the result from the critical event viewer:

I haven’t tried to reproduce the error in safe mode (yet). Malwarebytes is courrently running. Also: I’m running Avira antivirus, with Windows firewall.
