This is a weird one. Intermittent problem, sometimes fine, sometimes not.

I use "List" view and sometimes when I go to a file to open it the entire file list/column jumps three or four
files when the cursor is over it and by the time I click a different file is under the cursor and opens.

It is like pointing the cursor at file 15 and file 12 opens instead

Haven't come across this issue even once before, but my first thoughts are:

1) virus?
2) corruption in Windows?
3) corruption in drivers, responsible for input?
4) active script, which is bind to process/event and does the same functionality for except extra few lines (= someone's joke)?

If you can't fix it after trying to look into it, you could compensate it by making own script (via: https://autohotkey.com ) but it is a bad solution. A problem of this sort, must not be compensated but rather resolved...

You could start troubleshooter on pointing device/mice/mouse, and try sfc scannow function via command prompt (admin).
Or you could reinstall your mouse/touch pad 's driver, however when this happens, you should know how to use keyboard to control Windows, should your pointing device go deeper in problems and be no longer usable for the time being.

ADDED:

Forgot about one more possibility:

5) your pointing device might be getting faulty, e.g. sending "unintended" information to the system. I've recalled the case when I had a problem with mouse clicks, instead of a mere right-click - it would either do nothing or do a double-click. So in alike cases, software side on system is alright, but the device itself isn't. This is resolvable either by repairing the component or its replacement. Therefore, new question: Have you tried to use another pointing device input? If the other pointing device works alright for you, then it is component's problem (mice/touch pad), and if things remain to work as you described earlier, then it's about software side problem.

After the files jump, do they quit jumping? If so, then perhaps you could wait a second for them to jump, then click on them.

I use Samba to share my data drive with the other computers at my house and with my guest session in VMWare Workstation Player.
Thank you for the suggestions, I'll go through them.

Pointing and clicking works fine everywhere else, even on explorer buttons and menus.

Also O'k when folder windows are maximised but files jump as described when folders are resized smaller - which is how I use folders.

Tried sfc and malware scans all o'k

Then I came across this via google

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...e-and-repair-windows-file-and-folder-problems

It didn't mention my issue but I selected "other" and after running it I found the folder sizes and views had been reset to the defaults. I applied my preferences and the files are behaving themselves.

Rebooted and still works.

I will wait a day or two before marking thread as solved.

Thanks

It may also pay to wait a few seconds for Windows Explorer to settle down.
I often get caught by the Navigation pane list "jumping".

If I open Windows Explorer and wait, I can see that after a couple of seconds it "jumps".
Presumably it is still trying to populate the list entries.
