The driver is for something called a "PCI Simple Communications Controller". Now you'd think that would be pretty cut and dried wouldn't you:sarc:. I tried updating the driver and I get a message telling me that a driver can not be found for this device. WHAT DEVICE??? That is the mystery.
I did a search of the Hardware ID (located in the properties section of the driver details.) and I found this,(see attachment) but I don't know anymore than I did before finding it.:mad:
I tried checking with Intel but I can't seem to get any kind of response from them. Is this a driver for Windows 7 or is it a Intel driver of some sort?? The PCI_VEN number kind of indicated it's Windows 7 oriented, but then further down it says it's a HECI Controller. This site ( PCIVEN) offers it for a fee. My question is if they've got it why can't I find it for free??

Anybody here got a clue??
Thanks

PCI simple communication driver tends to be the Modem Driver. Check for a modem driver from Acer.

here: Acer Support: Drivers & Support Documents - Desktop / Aspire / Aspire E700

hope this helps

EDIT: After running some stuff I found this:

VEN 8086 = Intel
Dev 29a4 = The Intel Management Engine provides thermal management for Intel Desktop Board

Here is where I got that info: http://www.pcidatabase.com/

Using the PCI VEN and DEV numbers from your post :)

My guess is the chipset driver......

It's actually the chipset controller, not the modem.

From the readme files for the driver.....

* Product: Intel(R) Chipset Device Software
* Release: Production Version
* Version: 8.2.0.1014
* Target Chipset#: 965M
* Date: March 05 2007

Download the file with version 8.2.0.1014 from the link geeve posted. If that doesn't work try one of the iAMT drivers.

Acer certainly could have did a better job of explaining what those drivers are for.... iAMT????

Let us know.

First let me say I love the Avatar!! :roflmao: Secondly thanks for the find. I did check that page, but I didn't know what to download. I did go back through the device manager and updated (or tried to) the stuff that was on that page. They all came back as up to date. I even went (just now) to Intel and ran a check with their update utility. It came back as being up to date but it called it something else, (see attachment). I just went back to Acer and downloaded the file Sygnus said to.

Question: Will the fact that the chipset download is for Vista cause a problem now that I'm running Windows 7?? ( I'll wait until I check back for that answer before I try it)

I couldn't find that one in the device manager so I'm downloading it from the link you gave me.

I always like to double check before I start loading stuff, especially if it alters a driver.

Well folks back to square 1. I tried the iAMT driver that p5bdkw suggested. That told me that my PC didn't meet the requirements to install it.

I then tried the Chipset one from Acer website. It installed, but did not fix the problem. see attachment

That is the driver I did download. I ran the install, but it didn't cure the problem. I tried to pull up Windows 7 but it only went as far as Vista. However the Vista driver should have worked. When I bought this PC it came with Vista preinstalled by Acer. I have a hell of a time trying to find anything on their website and you can't ask for support because the warranty has run out and they won't help you. (Unless you want to yank out your credit card, then there's is all kinds of help, none of it is any good mind you; but it's there. I went that route when I was running Vista. They had the balls to tell me that a solution was not guaranteed even though you were paying for one.)
My son sent me my Avatar, he said it was fitting for all the problems I have with this PC. LOL

Sammy: there isn't any such thing as an intrusion here. If you've got the same problem by all means jump in. The more heads trying to come up with solution the better.

Don't give up yet! I will dig some more on my end. Give me a day or so to look around. I have to help my father inlaw fish a dead cow out of his pond in the morning, it fell through the ice and drown. But I will get back on it tomorrow and monday. In the mean time someone may come along and be able to help as well. Don't lose the faith LOL!

Hi
How did the weekend go? Didn't sound like much fun to me.

No, I've never tried it. (Everest) I'll give it a try though, at this point I'll try anything short of a fresh install.
I did see where you got to the Windows 7. When I went to the Acer website I had to start with what kind of PC do you have, what model is it. etc. When it came to what OS is on it Vista was as high as that page went. I did check the Windows 7 but it came back with the same drivers as Vista. I thought Vista was a PITA, I'm beginning to think 7 ain't much better.

My guess is its a 56k modem driver. You may need to open the case up and take out the modem and look for the make and model of the device!! In fact, if you don't use the 56k modem, when you take it out leave it out!!

Keep us posted!!

I don't think it's a modem problem. One of the first updates I got from Microsoft was a new driver update for that device. If it were a modem problem I would have a connection problem too. I can't just take it out, it's how I connect to the Internet. I also went to Motorola to make sure there were no other updates.
I also uninstalled the driver in the device manager and plugged it again. The plug and play picked it up and I got a second update for it from Microsoft. I also ran a scan for any hardware changes that might cause a conflict with the modem, came back with nothing.

Well double kudos to p5bdkw, he hit it right on the nose. I ran the Everest and it confirmed that it is the HECI. I just don't know why the drivers I've tried haven't fixed the issue. I'm hounding Intel Techs for a solution.

Thanks all for the help especially geeve for hanging in there.
