Finishing Macrium Free Cloning. Help

Not sure I understand these instructions as I used a USB connector that plugs into the new ssd drive and did the clone. It said I can put it in the other computer if it was done in an internal enclosure but if external follow the instructions below. Doesn't make sense as the new drive is attached to the usb being plugged in. Additionally though, nothing shows on the new drive but it went through with copying files process. When I got back to it, it said it was finished and I closed the progrom. I'm guessing I did something wrong. I'm a novice with these things. Thanks for any help. GBY

PS I do have a second hard drive installed in a cd rom case where my image and saved folders are stored. Should I have put the new ssd drive in there to clone ?

1. Plug the external drive into the PC that has a new hard drive installed.
2. Turn on the PC.
3. Enter the BIOS. Note that if your PC employs Secure Boot, you will have to turn it off in the BIOS before you can boot from an external hard drive.
4. Access your PC's boot menu.
5. Choose to boot from the external USB drive.

Windows 10 will load as if you hadn't replaced the drive, so Macrium Reflect is still installed. Launch it and follow the same steps to clone your external drive to the new internal drive.

It doesn't matter if you have Win 7 or Win 10. Why did you mentioned win 10?

To clone a drive using Macrium Reflect Free on a Laptop you must boot a OS. It can be your Windows drive on the laptop or from a Macrium reflect USB flash boot able drive.

If you boot from your Windows drive, launch Macrium Reflect and choose the Windows drive as Source and the SSD drive to receive the image (on the USB adapter) as Target. When finished replace the laptop drive with the new SSD that has received the image.

If you boot from a Macrium reflect USB flash boot able drive, choose the Windows drive (on the USB adapter or on the laptop) as Source and the new SSD drive to receive the image (on the Laptop or on the USB adapter) as Target. When finished, remove the USB flash boot able drive and the USB drive adapter and boot from the new SSD drive on the Laptop.

This is what I would do.
- Leave the original Windows drive on the laptop. Install Macrium reflect on it.
- Attach the new SSD to the USB adapter.
- Boot the laptop, launch Macrium reflect and choose the Windows drive as Source and the SSD drive to receive the image (on the USB adapter) as Target. If the target drive size (SSD) is different of the Source drive size, adjust the C: partition on the target.
- When finished, shut down and replace the original drive with the SSD.
- Boot the laptop with the SSD.

Thanks.Ok, I did as you would do except swapping the two drives. After I ran the Macriun free I looked in the Computer and the "D" drive that showed up when I made a simple volume in disk mgmt was no where to be found after I ran the Macrium. The SSD is still in the usb drive. Not sure what happened. When the macrium stopped after it said everything was sucessful I just closed it.

I gave you two options. Witch one you did? Please explain in details what you did.
If you swap the drives, where did you boot from? Win 7 can't boot from USB.

Macruim started running copying the source drive. I went back and it said. task completed sucesssfully. I closed the macrium and checked the computer but didn't see the original "D" drive I had a simple volume on the usb ssd that was the destination. That is where I stopped doing anything.

Please post a Disk manager image here as an attachment. Don't forget to expand the columns so we can read them. And post a hole Disk manager image.

Thanks for the help. Ii says Fat 32 for some reason. Weird as I said format ntfs

Drive D is the missing new ssd. I though it was expanded. I don't have good eyes so the screen is enlarged. Do you have a picture of one expanded ? Didn't see an expand button.

Yes that is the new ssd. 117 gb. Was just one 117 gb simple volume listed in the macrium free as target when I began. Guess I did something wrong. It was assigned "D"

You right !!! I'm an old guy, forgive me. I was taking files off a thumb drive from another laptop and forgot it was in before I started the post. I had removed the USB ssd I had used under the macrium free when it finished. The computer called the thumb drive D:. Now I plugged in the usb ssd and now a pop up says format it but it then disappears. Nothing shows up either under "computer" or disk mgmt showing the usb ssd it just disappeared.

The drive on the USB adapter isn't initialized so it's not formatted or has a letter assigned to it.
To clone a disk you don't need to initialize or format the drive.
Boot from the current drive and launch Macrium Reflect and you will see the SSD. Then clone and replace the laptop drive with the SSD. Adjust the C: partition to the size of the SSD.

Thank you. It was formatted and the whole drive was one simpe volume when I started. Not sure what would have happened. Should I just format it and let macrium do the rest.

Don't need to do anything. Launch Macrium and select clone. Make sure you select the right drive as Source and Target.
When you clone one drive to the another, Macrium will first clean all partitions on the target drive

Not sure I just got it off ebay for $4. The format screen shows up now and I choose quck format and run it but it says can't complte the action. Did I mess it up somehow ? thanks for your patience. By your screen name are you a ham operator.

You're not following my instructions and that could lead to a disaster.

I said you don't need to do anything. Launch Macrium and select clone. Make sure you select the right drive as Source and Target.

If it shows on Explorer, it is working and should also be on Macrium.
Launch Macrium and look for it as the target drive.
