FireFox causing complete computer freeze

Hello everyone. I have an issue that has been plaguing me for about a month or so at this point.

Whenever I'm using FireFox, which is my main browser and the one I have been using on this computer since I bought it (back in October 2010), sometimes the entire computer will lock up. Now, this means that I cannot alt+ctrl+del, can't move the mouse, can't do anything. It fully locks. This could last for just a few seconds, and everything goes back to normal, or - and this is the killer - it stays that way, and I am forced to hold down the power button on the tower to shut it off. If the freeze happens once during my browsing, and it's a short one that disappears quickly, then when I try to shut down the computer normally, it will not shut down. As in, I see the "Shutting Down..." screen, the monitor goes black (and the light turns orange for standby mode), but the computer DOES NOT shut down. I wonder what this freeze is doing to affect the shutdown process like that.

So to test things out to verify exactly what is causing the freeze....well, the computer never froze unless Firefox was active. I have played Path of Exile for about 20 hours over the course of three days without one single crash, freeze, or error of any kind. So I don't think it's a graphics issue. And yes, I've tried uninstalling FF completely (even going so far as to go to RegEdit after a full uninstall to delete any leftover Mozilla files). I also tried installing the beta version of FF 26.something, still froze on me.

I only have two add-ons/extensions for FF, Download Helper and AdBlock Plus. Even with one or both of these removed, the freeze still happens. And to absolutely cover all bases, I used nothing but Internet Explorer 11 for four solid days, with it being up for at least 3-4 hours per day if not longer. Not one single hiccup, freeze, or issue of any kind.

So in short, it is absolutely Firefox that is the root problem here. This problem arose completely out of nowhere, and it's quite frustrating! FireFox is my main browser of choice, and I would hate to have to discontinue its use in favor of Internet Explorer (I've tried Chrome, really didn't gel with me).

I am reaching out to you guys, I hope you can guide me to a solution! I'm completely at a loss as to what the problem could be. Thanks in advance!

-Mike

It is probably one of the add-ons causing that. Delete the add-ons and see what happens. Then you can carefully reintroduce them one by one. Maybe you find the culprit.

This is likely on Not Myself's detailed link, but two things usually cause Firefox to freeze (and freeze the PC as a result). Hardware acceleration and Flash.

Adobe Community: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

You can also check Event Viewer to see if it offers any clue. You will definitely see an error if you have to hard shut down, so that is not the issue.

Why are you so dedicated to Firefox then?:) the simpliest way is to use another browser. Don't you think so?:)
all in all, i agree that it could be due to thr addons or toolbars installed. remove them all + clean up your cache and cookie list. and at last reinstall the browser.
