Fixed my laptop! Rejoice!

A few months ago, I took my hard drive out of my laptop to hot swap into my rig. Routine. I picked the laptop up to move it- and dropped it a mere foot to the carpet, where it landed on the corner where the hard drive had been. I quickly checked, and rechecked, put the hard drive back in and plugged the power cord in, and NOTHING. The power button would not even light up when I pressed it.

It sat for these months, 1) cuz I was busy transferring schools. and 2) I couldn't bear the thought of discovering it was truly gone.

Tonight, while going through the long boring process of reformatting my friend's hdd, I decided to occupy myself with taking my laptop apart fully. Nothing looked the least bit off. Cleaned out a big dust bunny from the heatsink grill. Put the whole thing back together, and viola! IT TURNED ON!!!!

I HAS LAPTOP AGAIN!!! ZOMG!

Now I really can go order all those cool express cards & ssd for it that I wanted!

Miranova23, That's great. congrats quester12 here . I have rebuilt a few laptops myself and found some weird stuff inside. What brand was it ?

That's good to know. It is possible that by dropping it you have dislodged something, even if it appeared that nothing was dislodged when you took your laptop apart. The very action of doing this, together with you checking to make sure the connections were firm, was probably enough to get your system working again.

Totally know that feeling My dad's laptop (miserable old clunker btw) had a surge enter it through the Ethernet jack once because of a thunderstorm...and it zapped off and wouldn't come on again. I figured it was dead and started removing the harddisk - I had to take the whole bottom cover and a few more parts off. For some reason while the HD was out I figured I'd try again to turn it on (with AC power connected) and wham! It went to the BIOS and happily complained about a missing boot device! So, back in went the HD and it's been working fine ever since, except Ethernet is well and truly shot (but my Dad has no use for it anyway). =^_^=

It's a Dell XPS M1210. My little baby. <3 I've kept her in tip-top condition these past 5 years, and is currently running perfectly smoothly on Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition 2005, 2GHz dual core, 3.25 ram. I found 2 express cards on Newegg I want to try when I have the chance. 1 with eSATA connections, another with USB3.0.

Certainly is a wonderful feeling, just having 2 computers in my apt again! Thanks everyone =D

I so know the feeling!
My custom-built desktop machine is 4 years old and my laptop is a very modest one...a Compaq CQ60 (with modded BIOS and soon a faster internal HD, though). Still, I keep my two babies in top condition and I'm happy with them.
