flashback to 1998? toshiba tecra 500CDT

someone just gave me this old dinosaur, and it seems to work. it has a slot in the front for the floppy, hard drive, and CD drive... but it seems you cant run all 3 at the same time... I had to install the Hard drive in the slot to get windows 98 to boot.

16 MB of RAM.
intel pentium processor at 120mhz
weight: 8 lbs... feels like more than that.
word 97... or office 97? I saw word for sure.

I feel like I've entered a time warp with this thing... fun to mess with... it's pretty slow though.

Obviosly slow because you installed a Windows 98 on it. The minimim recommended RAM for Win98 is 64MB. Nice find for a laptop

no usb ports. no ethernet. no wireless. looks like I cant even get online with this thing? this may have been before the web was invented? lol. has an internal modem. dont think that will work with fios internet? :/

I collected old computers for awhile. I love old laptops, I'm currently playing with an IBM A31 fun laptop to surf forums with over wireless.

I don't believe that's true. As much as it's out of support, Windows 95 is STILL a copyrighted product. You still need a license to run it.

It's not. Abandonware only means that the developer no longer cares about the software, but all the licenses and copyright still holds. There are 2 ways in which abandoware becomes legal for usage without explicit consent.

The copyright owner releases the software under a new license, either freeware or open source, thus enabling anyone to use or even modify it. Many old programs gone this way, but Microsoft hasn't for Win9X. Therefore the same terms as in these days still count: you must purchase a license to use it. Problematic, since MS no longer sells those.

The copyright expires and it becomes public domain automatically. At this point, Windows will be literally owned by anyone and we'll be free to use and modify as we please (even using the leaked sources will be legal at that point). Copyright expiration happens 70 years after the dead of the copyright owner. I'm not sure if that means 70 years after Bill Gates dies or 70 years after Microsoft closes down. Either way, it's a loooooong time. Until then, we must buy Windows or wait for MS to release it voluntarily.

With a bit more memory, it's certainly possible:

Similar videos show Windows 7 working with as little as 96MB of RAM. 16MB would be a good challenge!
