Folders visible to other user

My son has an account on my one PC for gaming I noticed recently that by going through C:/user/etc I can access his private folders while signed into my account. He can access my folders through his account. I was under the impression that this shouldn't be possible. Did I miss a setting somewhere? Can this be disabled to ensure privacy?

You can use permissions to deny his user account access:

Take note of the warnings. Also note that System Restore will not always revert permissions in the event you lock yourself out. A partition image using Acronis TI, free Macrium Reflect or the like, however, will restore the entire partition, including permissions.

Are you both part of the Administrators group? Then you both will have access no matter what.
And if you have UAC turned off you won't get a prompt it will just grant you access automatically if you are.

I am an administrator so I can understand why I see his folders. He is a standard user though so I thought he should be blocked automatically from seeing mine. Are permissions the only way to do this?

My ones? Yes, he can. Like I said before, he'd have to get to them through C:\Users\etc but at 12 years old that's hardly a challenge for him...

I don't know, haven't tried that. He can read/see/view them though. He can copy from my folders into his. That much I do know.

Read up on the tutorial by Brink on setting permissions.

Use that tutorial to remove his permissions ( uncheck them).

You may find that learning to uncheck the permissions for a user is not intuitive obvious. I recall that when I first started using that feature, I fumbled around for quite a time.

Remember that to change permissions, you must be the owner.

First find out who the owner is. If the owner is your son, then that will explain much.

I've got a couple of suggestions for you.

And if they don't work, I guarantee you that I can get you there from the command line using the takeown command and the icacls command, although with numerous steps.

to make sure that I could get from here to there using the command line, like in the NT days, then I've gone thru all the gyrations of creating accounts, creating folders, creating files, and then locking out a standard user completely.
