Follow-up SP1 misery

I know that I had posted my question/problem here a month or two ago regarding the inability to install sp1--despite the best efforts and links provided by those here. Since I cannot locate the thread I'm posting the resolution.

Let it suffice to say that I followed all suggested actions in all links provided to no avail. Three recent (within the past few days) things occurred along the way to resolution that may or may not be linked and pertinent--I'll let you be the judge.

1. The most recent .net security update failed--it was either for 3.5 or 4. I downloaded a tool whose purpose was to purportedly untangled and remove prior .net installs ready for new. After running same, I let update take its time and decide when and what .net it wished to download and install. After a day or two update installed a variety of 3.5 and 4 regular and security patches.

2. Update has always said that the size of my sp1 was 17.x which seemed small. I opted for a direct download of sp1--~500Mb. Post download, the install failed right off.

3. This last step appears to be my savior. I found a link to: Run the System Update Readiness Tool: Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2. After running this tool I again ran update and it now said the size of sp1 was 44.x--500. The install succeeded--followed by several additional updates.

In short [Vent & I know the responsibility has zero to do with those present], this entire process sucks and as a consumer I should not have to be a weekend semi-computer whiz to simply install updates.

I hope this recollection is useful for someone else.
