It's not the PC that's in trouble, but the PC industry - it is eyeing Apple's revenue streams with green envy and lots o' sadness and despair, and can do nothing about it.

The PC is here to stay, and we should include the Macs in this category too - as we all like (or would like) to have a home we can call our own, we all like to have a computing home base that is totally ours and under our control & our watchful eyes.

It's kind of sad that so many reporters and producers at MSNBC are sitting in their faux ivory tower where they enjoy infinite bandwidth and nearly unlimited computing resources. The cloud has some problems to address before it is as viable as these pundits think it is. The first two that come to mind are Bandwidth and Security. Anyone have a breakdown on the percentages of Internet users by bandwidth? What percentage of users are below 1.5Mbs? Below 3Mbs? I suspect these percentages are a lot higher than is commonly believed. Security is a bit like Rule 34; if it's on the net it will be hacked. Strong encryption protects the content, but won't stop hackers from corrupting or deleting the data. Cloud companies may not have robust backup and recovery solutions. Remember that animation house that lost an entire season of material? All because a former employee of the storage company they used deleted their data and nobody had backups.

actually as of a few months ago here in the states jailbreaking you phone / internet device became legal. even if it wasn't i want to see someone make the mistake of banning me for modifying my own property.

These so called "enlightened experts" are often times nothing more than "paid marketing pundits" that have a stake in communicating a message to help increase the sales of other software or hardware.

I'm sick of hearing CNBC having their interested parties telling me that "the cloud is the future" considering the SERIOUS security issues of having my data on some virtual server out there, and the possible cost of utilizing it to a large degree, I seriously doubt that the cloud will replace the current PC method for a long time....hopefully never.

I always love visiting Tom's Hardware forums because you have a pretty savvy group of users over there, not all including myself are experts or programmers writing code, BUT when you bring up the subject of "The Cloud" it instantly brings out the justified hatred of it.

I remember when CNBC was dropping hints about the next big thing in computing "TC" about four years ago, interestingly they didn't tell you exactly what it was just that it was "The Future" of the internet and personal computing.

Now I know why, if they had let the cat out of the bad at the very beginning the negative aspects would have been out there for savvy buyers and users to think about in depth, instead they strung people along with the term and only gradually went into detail.

I personally will NEVER let any of my most private info loose on a cloud platform, ever!

another of these so called experts is the "Gartner" organisation -- usually about 50% of their projections fail --which is the exact same % as random guessing would give you -- yet organisations pay HUGE amounts of money for their usually rubbishy research reports.

Similarly look at the stupid notice people take of so called agencies who "rate USA's credit rating" -- wasn't it that same stupid organisation that totally missed the Bank / finance problem with the "sub prime slime" -- and who in their right mind thinks the USA is going out of business any time soon --if it does I don't know what the rest of us would do !!

Just ignore these so called predictions -- they are totally USELESS.

We will use devices differently -- of course tablet like devices and iphones are convenient for some type of internet access but I'd hate to create a spreadsheet, presentation or do stock exchange trading on these.

why would Apple want to kill their illustrious and popular line of mac "pc" computers with tablets and smart phones?

and if that's the case, why would competitors stop making pc's as well? Seeing that components are becoming increasingly cheaper - pc computers are going down in price while new tablet technology will be high for the interim.

Hey I'm approaching retirement and if they think for a nano moment I want to be squinting at some ridiculous piece of junk that I can shove in my pocket they must be quite psychotic.

I love my PC and all the things I can do with all 4 of them - no they can put the ipads and phones where the monkey put it's nuts. As for this "cloud" I don't know what it's all about and I'd rather it stay that way.

Oh wonder if they have thought of bringing it out in braille for the visually impaired - hows that going to go.

Seems to me we are supposed to act like trained monkeys and jump at the masters command while they make their trillions from air heads who have got nothing else better to do but to have the latest piece of idiotology to play with.

The other thing that comes to mind is how the marketing and PR hacks have what I think is a farily recent stategy where they actually are leading the gullible consumer by the nose but letting them THINK they are making a independent choice. Anyone else notice this over the past decade or so?

It's clear to me that Apple for example has its tenticles in media like CNBC, and others. I honestly believe that somehow money or favors are changing hands between these organizations, because I rarely see outfits like CNBC ever giving a NEGATIVE comment about Apple, period. I defintely believe that this disguised advertising is what giving Apple its popularity, not the independently minded, savvy consumer. Am I nuts to think this?

Not at all, I also see it all too often, I see a lot of gadget review sites giving high ratings/"perfect" reviews to any Apple affiliated product that rolls across their list of products to review. My favorite site, Cnet, they used to do a lot of legit reviews, nothing seems biased. Ever since Apple rolled in with the I-Pad, and other touch-screen crap, all the Apple products would get the highest scores of reviews. So since Apple is paying off all of these industries to make their products look to be the best thing that ever existed, the tech-savvy reader would think it is a good product and would be subconsciously tricked into buying a product they would hate and would perform horribly.

I remember when the same press had similar attitudes towards McAfee back before the NAI days. The market niche press is often the victim of advertiser capture regardless of the industry segment. It doesn't matter if you're talking about gun rags, computer rags, guitar rags or the online counterparts. If there is advertising there will be pressure on the writers from the publishers not to alienate the advertisers.

So I'll admit that I watch the sunday cartoons on fox (well not last night :/) but anyway, there is an Apple commercial seemingly every single break over a 3 hour time span. That's like 20 Apple ads in a single evening.

They have the money to absolutely BRAINWASH people with nothing less that a pure carpet bombing of constant inescapable media hype. I'm not sure you get that many beer ads during a football game!

Most of my co -workers have iphones i pod's and i think it's called Itouch

one co worker spends atleast 300.00 a month on the phone and apps

I just think that is way outrageous ,I mean seriously is it really that crucial to look at facebook or myspace instead of just waiting till later

If you look at "The Big Apple", ha I love that pun, you think there may be some worry here. But look at who they are up against when they go up against the PC on the maketing level...HP, IBM, AMD, Intel, MS, Dell, I mean like lets get real....And that does not even scratch the sruface if you consider software companies. It is like the United States giving up fossil fuel...it will not happen in our life times.
